At some point in life we all seek validation that the work we have done has been valued
and more importantly it has made a difference. I am so thankful for the kind words written by
Heidi Tuescher-Gille and Joshua Shannon. I have the deepest personal and professional respect
for these two individuals. I am so grateful and humbled that these professionals are confident in
my abilities as a higher education professional. Though these letters range across multiple
learning outcomes, the program learning outcome of commitment to social justice most relates to
I had the pleasure of meeting Heidi as an undergraduate student in 2008 and throughout
that time I have learned so much from her over the last 10 years. Under her leadership, I worked
as a tour guide, student office worker, and then an admission advisor for the University of
Wisconsin-Platteville. Heidi speaks to my commitment to serving others and passion for helping
students. In my career, my drive has come from advocating for students and helping them
develop and reach their goals. As a regional representative, my strong self-discipline and
communication skills on the team allowed me to be successful and reach team goals.
Joshua and I became immediate friends after meeting in our orientation and taking
classes together during our first semester. After weeks of learning more about power, privilege,
and oppression we had deep discussions about Whiteness and White privilege which led to a
desire to analyze these more to dismantle systems of oppression. We established the White
Allyship Community (WAC) to bring self-identified White students together to discuss White
culture, White privilege, microaggressions, allyship, among other topics. This process has been
conversations and gaining more effective communication skills that I can utilize as a student
affairs professional.
