Checkpoint 1.1
● Describe the difference between the Internet and the Web.
○ Internet is a professional organization that provides leadership in addressing issues related to the
future of the Internet
○ The internet is a public, World-wide connected network of various computer networks.
○ The Web is the graphical user interface to information stored on computers running web servers
connected to the Internet.
● Explain three events that contributed to the commercialization and exponential growth of the Internet.
○ Removal of the ban on commercial activity
○ Development of the World Wide Web by Tim Berners Lee at CERN
○ Development of Mosaic, the first graphics - based web browser at NCSA
○ Personal computers were increasingly available and affordable
○ Online service providers offered low - cost connections to the Internet
● Is the concept of universal design important to web developers? Explain your answer.
○ The universal design is the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to
the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design.
■ Yes, because without universal design, many people with disabilities would not be able
to use the web
Checkpoint 1.2
● Describe the components of the client/server model as applied to the Internet.
○ web browser is the client that requests web pages from the web server, who responds by
sending files back
● Identify two protocols used on the Internet to convey information that use the Internet but do not use the
Web.
○ FTP (File Transfer protocol) used to transfer files on internet
○ SMTP(simple mail transfer protocol) used for sending e-mail on internet
● Explain the similarities and differences between a URL and a domain name.
○ The URL represents the address of the resource via the internet. It also consists of a protocol as
well. The Domain name locates an organization or other entity via the internet. It is also
associated with a unique IP address & is a key component in a url.
○ Domain name locates an organization or other entity on the Internet. Domain Name System
divides the Internet into logical groups and understandable names, and associates unique
computer IP Addresses with the text-based domain names you type into a web browser
○ URL is a type of URI which represents the network location of a resource such as a web page, a
graphic file, or an MP3 file.
Checkpoint 2.1
➔ HTML
◆ The set of markup symbols or codes placed in a file intended for display on a Web browser
page.
● Describe the features of a heading element and how it configures the text.
○ Heading elements are used to make the web pages more accessible and usable. They are
organised into six levels from h1 through h6. All text contained within heading tags is displayed
with bold font weight. Also the size of text is largest for heading number 1 and smallest for
heading number 6. The heading tags are part of body section and we can't use on the head
section.
● Describe the difference between ordered lists and unordered lists.
○ Unordered list: Display bullet or list marker before each enter in the list
○ Ordered list: Display a numbering or lettering system to itemize the information contained in the
list.
● Describe the purpose of the blockquote tag.
○ Indents a block of text for special emphasis.
Checkpoint 2.2
● Describe the purpose of special characters.
○ The purpose of special characters is use to display characters such as copyright symbol (©).
● Describe when to use an absolute link. Is the http protocol used in the href value?
○ Use absolute link when we want to link to resources on other websites. The href value for an
absolute hyperlink to the home page of a website includes http:// protocol name, and domain
name.
● Describe when to use a relative link. Is the http protocol used in the href value?
○ Use relative link when we want to link to pages on our own website. The href for a relative
hyperlink does not begin with the http:// and does not include domain name.

Checkpoint 3.1
➔ CSS - Cascade Style Sheets
◆ provides the functionality of style sheets (and much more)for web developers
◆ a flexible, cross-platform, standards-based language developed by the W3C.
● List three reasons to use CSS on a web page.
○ Greater typography and page layout control
○ Style is separate from structure
○ Styles can be stored in a separate document and associated with the web page
○ Potentially smaller documents
○ Easier site maintenance
● When designing a page that uses colors other than the default colors for text and background, explain
why it is a good reason to configure style rules for both text color and background color.
○ It is a good reason to configure both the text color and the background color because the page
will not be plain and to attract people to read the page.
● Describe one advantage to using embedded styles instead of inline styles.
○ Embedded styles are coded in the header and apply to the entire page. It is more efficient than
using inline styles to code individual styles on HTML elements.
Checkpoint 3.2
● Describe a reason to use embedded styles. Explain where embedded styles are placed on a web page.
○ When you want to configure text and color formatting for the entire web page. They are placed
in the header section. The <style> tags are used to contain selectors and properties that
configure the embedded styles.
● Describe a reason to use external styles. Explain where external styles are placed and how web pages
indicate they are using external styles.
○ Used to configure the text and color formatting for some or all of the pages on a website in one
file. They are placed in a separate text file that uses .css file extension. Web pages use the <link>
tag to indicate they are using external style sheet.
● Write the code to configure a web page to use an external style sheet called “mystyles.css”
○ <link rel="stylesheet" href="mystyles.css">
Chapter 4
Checkpoint 4.1
● Is it reasonable to try to code a web page that looks exactly the same on every browser and every
platform? Explain your answer.
○ Similar but not exactly the same. Every web designers will have some unique code embedded in
their website to make it a bit different from the others.
● When a web page containing the style rules below is rendered in a browser, the border does not display.
Describe what is incorrect with the following code:h2 { background-color: #ff0000border-top: thin solid
#000000}
○ There’s no “;” tag at the end. It suppose to be:
h2{background-color: #ff0000 border-top: thin solid color #000000};
● True or False? CSS can be used to configure visual elements such as rectangular shapes and lines on web
pages.
○ True. Rectangular shapes can be coded with the background-color property, and lines can be
coded with the border property.
Checkpoint 4.2
● Describe the CSS to configure a graphic named circle.jpg to display once in the background of all <h1>
elements. Code sample CSS to demonstrate this.
○ h1{background-image: url (circle.jpg);
background-repeat: no repeat;}
● Describe the CSS that configures a file named bg.gif to repeat vertically down the background of a web
page. Code sample CSS to demonstrate this.
○ body{ background-image: url(bd.gif);
background-repeat: repeat-y;
● Explain how the browser will render the web page if you use CSS to configure both a background image
and a background color.
○ The browser will display background color immediately. Then, the browser will render the
background image and repeat the image as specified. The background color will appear in areas
not covered by the background image.
Checkpoint 4.3
● Search for a site that uses image links to provide navigation. List the URL of the page. What colors are
used on the image links? If the image links contain text, is there good contrast between the background
color and letters on the image links? Would the page be accessible to a visitor who is sight-challenged?
How have accessibility issues been addressed? Is the alt attribute used to describe the image link? Is there
a row of text links in the footer section of the page? Answer the questions above and discuss your findings
Chapter 5
Checkpoint 5.1
● List the four basic principles of design. View the home page of your school and describe how each
principle is applied.
○ Repetition.
-Repeat visual elements throughout design
Contrast.
-Add visual excitement and draw attention
Proximity.
-Group related items.
Alignment.
-Align elements to create visual unity.
● View http://www.walmart.com, http://www.mugglenet.com, and http://www.
sesamestreet.org/muppetDescribe the target audience for each site. How do their designs differ? Do the
sites meet the needs of their target audiences?
Checkpoint 5.2
● View the home page of your school. Use the Best Practices Checklist (Table 5.1) to evaluate the page.
Describe the results.
● View your favorite web site (or a URL provided by your instructor). Maximize and resize the browser
window. Decide whether the site uses fixed or fluid design.Adjust the screen resolution on your monitor
(Start > Control Panel > Display > Settings) to a different resolution than you normally use. Does the site
look similar or very different? List two recommendations for improving the design of the site.
● List three best practices of using graphics on web pages. View the home page of your school. Describe the
use of graphic design best practices on this page.
Chapter 6
Checkpoint 6.1
● List the components of the box model from innermost to outermost.
○ The components of the box model, from innermost to outermost, are the content, padding,
border and margin.
● Describe the purpose of the CSS float property.
○ The purpose of the float property is to shift the display of an element to the right or left side of
the container element.
● Which two CSS properties can be used to clear a float?
○ The clear property and the overflow property can be used to "clear" a float.
Checkpoint 6.2
● Describe a reason to use HTML5 structural elements instead of div elements for some page areas.
○ The div element is a multipurpose generic element that configures a section or division of a web
gape. HTML5 intros new elements for configuring page areas intended to be more specific in
their semantic purpose. As time goes on and browser support increases, HTML5 elements are
expected to be the norm.
● Describe the purpose of the article element.
○
● Describe the purpose of the hgroup element.
○
Chapter 7
Checkpoint 7.1
● Describe a reason to organize the files in a website using folders and subfolders.
○ To make easy in finding all of the files.
● Which attribute configures a hyperlink to open the file in a new browser window or tab?
○ Target attribute
● State an advantage of using CSS sprites in a website.
○ It cuts back the HTTP requests. By having fewer images or multiple small graphics, it made easy
load to the website. The fewer HTTP requests, the lesser lag to access the webpage.
Checkpoint 7.2
● Describe a design consideration when configuring a web page for mobile display.
○ If the style already modified it would affect other elements with the same style and it help to
save time because multiple formatting option combined in one style and could be apply once.
● True or False. The media="handheld" attribute reliably targets mobile devices.
○ true
Chapter 8
Checkpoint 8.1
● Describe the purpose of using a table on a web page.
○ To arrange data in rows and column.
● How is the text contained a th element displayed by the browser?
○ It will show the element by giving its row and column headings and the text will be shown in bold
and centered.
● Describe one coding technique that increases the accessibility of an HTML table.
○ Giving an information beside the table and any caption that will describe and define the table.
