MEMO: Elder in Residence Program at FP Walshe School

In conjunction with Alberta Education’s Classroom Improvement Fund (CIF), FP Walshe has
contracted with Mr. Joe Eagle Tail Feathers to serve as our Elder in Residence. Mr. Eagle Tail
Feathers will come to the school several time per month and under the supervision of
administration will:

 meet with individuals and small groups of students on a volunteer basis,

 make presentations to staff at staff meetings and professional development days,
 conduct volunteer lunchtime activities for students/staff (eg. tea and storytelling, Elder talks),
 consult with the administration and staff to address student needs.

Over 35% of students at FP Walshe come from a First Nations Metis & Inuit (FNMI) background.
FNMI students at FP Walshe will benefit from the presence of an Elder in the building on a
regular basis. Mr. Eagle Tail Feathers will provide mentorship and a variety of supports for
students and staff such as:

 sharing FNMI cultural beliefs and practices,

 culturally appropriate crisis support for FNMI students,
 modeling cross cultural understanding at FP Walshe,
 culturally appropriate advice and guidance for FNMI students.

Teachers and staff will also benefit from the presence of an Elder to deepen their understanding of
cultural beliefs and practices. This would assist in infusion of FNMI content in curriculum and
classrooms.

The desired outcomes of this program are:

 enriched student learning of FNMI culture,

 deeper connection between FNMI communities and FP Walshe School,
 stronger appreciation and understanding for FNMI culture for staff and students,
 greater resiliency in FNMI students and families,
 greater sense of belonging for FNMI students and families.

If you have any questions, please call Mr. Paiha at the school.
