Title and Description of the Group Activity / Project:

Scenario

Operating as a separate company from Wiltshire College the Arc Theatre provides a number of
services for the local community as well as acting as part of the college’s facility. One of the
elements of the theatre is a functioning bar facility which operates during specific events, particularly
when the theatre is open to the public. The Arc Theatre is undergoing a re-branding exercise
developed in conjunction with the college marketing department. The Arc Bar is in need of it’s own re
branding to keep in line with that of the Theatre itself.

Overview

The purpose of this brief is to set a task that closely replicates the needs and working constraints for
graphic design production in the media industries. This is a chance for you to create something
relevant whilst demonstrating your skills and abilities.

The Brief

“The Arc Theatre branding is very out of date. It does not line up with how the theatre is progressing as
a venue for contemporary theatre and musical theatre. The marketing department have started work on
a new logo for the theatre but have not yet looked into the bar branding. The arc is currently called the
Arcadia Bar and has branding as attached. I would like to change the name to the Arc Bar so the new
logo etc would need to reflect this change.

The new theatre logo is lettering based and is very clean and bold. The bar branding must be very clear
and easy to read but can be a bit more quirky than the theatre logo. Ideally the bar logo would look
good in black and white but also have a colour version that could be used. The current colours around
the theatre are Purple and Teal, possibly the logo could use these colours although I am open to this
changing. Most importantly I would like the logo to be very current and reflect the changing and growing
arc theatre. It is also important that the logo works alongside Wiltshire college branding and does not
look out of place alongside the theatre or college logo”.

I worked to complete the brief outlined above. My main role in the completion of this brief was to act as

game working from provided concept art. This is a new role for me as I have only ever worked from my
own concepts before, and so it proved challenging. It was also challenging in that I had to work to a
very tight list of specifications.

need to improve
I least enjoyed working with the constraint of having to get the work to match up with Arc Theatres pre-
on existing graphics. This proved more difficult than if I was able to be really innovative and create
something from scratch, however I recognise this as an essential skill when working in industry.

Skills and knowledge I would like to improve:

I feel like my use of more advanced graphic techniques within Photoshop could be pushed further. I
would like to be able to create my own type set from scratch for example. I have pushed myself to try
out new things, but the time frame didn’t enable me to be as adventurous as I would have liked at
times.
