Sleep paralysis occurs when the brain and body mechanisms overlap, not walking in sync during sleep,

causing us to jerk awake in the middle of the REM cycle. When a person awakens before the REM cycle is
over, the brain is not ready to transmit a wake signal so the body is still conditioned in a dream state, aka
half asleep half-conscious. Therefore, you will feel a stiff body, difficulty breathing, and can not speak
when 'overpowering'.
