New York waiting for ten or fifteen minutes, you may have some explaining to do. Time is seen as
relatively flexible in some cultures but is viewed more rigidly in others.
Back in the 1950s, anthropologist Edward Hall described how the social rules of time like a silent
language for a given culture. He described how variations in the perception of time can lead to
misunderstandings between people from separate countries. “An ambassador who had been kept waiting
by foreign visitors needs to understand that if he visitors mutters an apology, this is not necessarily an
insult, “Hall wrote.
Social psychologist Robert Levine has conducted so-called pace of life studies in 31 countries. He ranked
the countries by measuring three things: walking speed on urban sidewalks, how quickly postal clerks
could fulfill a request for a common stamp and the accuracy of public clocks.
Kevin Birth, an anthropologist, has examined time perception in Trinidad. There, if someone meeting
friends at 5.00 p.m, people show up at 6.45 or 7 and say any time is Trinidad time. “You can’t simply go
into a society and ask someone, tell me about your conception of time, “Birth says. “ You have to come

Increasing numbers of parents in the US are choosing to teach their kids at home. The US Department of
education estimated that 1999, around 850,000 children were being homeschooled. Originally,
homeschooling was used for students who couldn’t attend school because of learning difficulties. Today,
however, more parents are taking on the responsibility of educating their children at home due to
dissatisfaction with the education system relating to class size or problems inside the classroom, for
example violence.
Advocates of homeschooling believe that children learn better when they are in a secure, loving
environment. They can also pick and choose what and when to study, which enables them to learn at their
own page. In contrast, critics of homeschooling say that children are not in classrooms miss out on
learning important social skills because they have little interaction with their peers. Moreover, they have
raised concerns about the ability of parents to teach their kids effectively because they are not competent
educators and have no teacher training.
Whatever the arguments for or against it, homeschooling on the US is growing. There are now websites,
support groups that enable parents to learn more about educating children. Homeschooling today is an
accepted alternative to an educational system that some believe is falling.
