Principle 5: Application of Content

The teacher understands different perspectives and knows how to connect concepts to

engage learners in critical thinking, creativity and collaborative problem solving related to

authentic local and global issues. The teacher develops lessons that will engage students to

critically think about the problem and come up with a solution with their peers. The teacher will

include authentic local and global issues into the lesson. The teacher will show students a

previous concept and connect to a new concept.

I don’t have much experience with this concept. I know that building onto harder

concepts is a highly sought skill when training/teaching students. While in High School, I lead a

few sectionals. There were measures of music that I needed to break down into smaller parts or

even help subdivide the measures. This helped my peers grasp the rhythms easier. I’m sure I

have had other opportunities to work with this concept without realization; however, that is all

that I can remember of having experience with this standard. As for the authentic local and

global issues of the standard, I am not sure how to apply that to a lesson.

I am a Freshmen at Ball State University and know that my future courses at Ball State

University will guide me to future success and better understanding of this standard. Observing

classrooms and attending teacher conferences will help guide me to success with this standard.
