1) Why does alloy is stronger than pure metal?

The example of alloy is bronze whereas the example of pure metal is copper. Alloy is
stronger than pure metal because the size of copper atom and tin atom is different.
The foreign atom, tin disrupts the orderly arrangement of copper atom. When force
is applied, the atoms will not slide easily.
2) Experiment to determine the hardness of pure metal and alloy

Aim : To study the hardness of pure metal and its alloy

Problem statement : Are alloys harder than pure metals?

Hypothesis : The diameter of dent on bronze is smaller than the diameter if dent on the

copper metal.

Variables : (a) Manipulated : Type of block

(b) Responding : Diameter of the dent

(c) Fixed : Size of steel ball bearing

Apparatus : Retort stand and clamps, 1 kg of weight, metre ruler, steel ball bearing.

Materials : Copper block, bronze block, cellophane tape, thread.

Procedures : (1) Stick a steel ball bearing onto a copper block using a cellophane tape

(2) Hang a 1 kg weight at a height of 50 cm above the ball bearing

(3) Drop the weight so that it hits the ball bearing

(4) Measure the diameter of the dent made on the copper block

(5) Repeat steps 1 to 4 twice on the other parts of the copper block in order

to obtain an average value of diameter of dents formed

(6) Repeat steps 1 to 5 using a bronze block to replace the copper block

(7) Record the readings in the table provided.

Tabulation of data :
