Curriculum Area: Book Club/ Social Studies
What I notice
Students are split into different groups that
are book clubs
Students read books such as “The Boy in the
Striped Pajamas” and “Number the Stars”
They are reading historical fiction books
about World War II.
Talking about events that happened during
this time and how it affected people in the
USA.
Students also talk about Germany and its
history
Students looked up historical events that
were significant to WWII to find more
background information that helps them
understand the book.
Students followed questions for each chapter
that included inferential questions and
vocabulary words they had to figure out
based on context clues.

Thoughts, Questions, Connections to
Methods Classes
Students are interested in this topic and they
get very excited during book club
Most of S.S is integrated into reading and
writing lessons in the classroom.
Teacher mentioned how she wishes she had
more time for integrated studies.
The teacher is more of a facilitator during
this time. She allows students to have book
club on their own while she walks around
and listens in on groups
Students are building their 21st century skills
of communication and collaboration through
book club.
How can we allow schools to have more
time for S.S? Students are so engaged during
this time and it seems like this information is
sticking with them more.
