CHAPTER 1

INTODUCTION

Background

Mosque" is the English name for a place of Muslim worship. The Arabic term for this house of
Muslim worship is "Masjid," which literally means "place of prostration" (in prayer). Mosques
are also known as Islamic centers, Islamic community centers or Muslim community centers.

A msoque is generally a very symbolic place for muslims ,being a humble way for muslims to
recreate pure divine presence on earth.The primary purpose of the mosque is to serve a place
where muslims can come together for prayer.Nevertheless mosque are known around the world
nawadays for their islamic architeture but most importantly for its general vitality to the muslim
community.

In this mosque not only prayers took place, but it was a school of knowledge where companions
used to study Quran and ask questions. It was a treasure from which charity work was done and
the sick as well as a place for giving du’a. In fact the mosque extended to the care of the needy
and orphans.
