<bioghist> <head>Historical Note</head> <p> The history of the Schenectady Section
of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) dates back to 1898
with the founding of the General Electric Engineering Society. The Schenectady
Section of the American Institute for Electrical Engineers (AIEE) itself was
founded January 26, 1903 and merged with the older General Electric Engineering
Society on December 15th of that year. This combined organization served as a
professional organization for local electrical engineers, mostly with connections
to the local General Electric plant. Following the merger of the American
Institute for Electrical Engineers with the Institute of Radio Engineers in 1963,
the organization changed its name to the current Schenectady Section of the
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. To this day the organization
serves to provide education and connections to those working in fields related to
electrical engineering.</p>
<p> From 1925 onward, the Schenectady Section of the IEEE also sponsored the
Steinmetz Memorial Lectures Series, named in honor of Charles Proteus Steinmetz,
the inaugural chairman of the Schenectady Section of the AIEE. which began as an
annual lecture by leading figures in the worlds of science and electrical
engineering. Such figures as the Nobel Prize winner Robert A. Millikan and Igor
Sikorsky, a pioneer in the field of helicopter design have given the Steinmetz
Memorial Lecture over the years. The Lecture series still runs every few years,
organized in conjunction with Union College.</p> </bioghist>
<scopecontent> <head> Scope Note </head> <p> The first series in this artificial
collection contains several different manuals for putting together radio
transmitters that had been produced and designed by General Electric from the 1930s
to the late 1940s. The second series in the collection contains documentation on
the IEEE Schenectady Section’s administration, including correspondence, meeting
minutes, membership rolls and dues, and publications primarily during the period
from 1956 through 1960. </p>
<p> The third series in the collection contains information on the Steinmetz
Memorial Lecture Series, including annual programs, promotional fliers and
correspondence confirming the attendance of several of the lecturers. The
collection cover a period of time from 1941 through 2012, with the bulk of the
material between 1980 and 2005. </p>
<p> The fourth and final series within the collection is an assortment of
newsletters from the IEEE Schenectady Section and the Schenectady General Electric
Engineers and Scientists’ Association. The names of the newsletters themselves
changed over time, and they are organized chronologically for each of the
respective two organizations. The IEEE collection covers a period from 1963-1993,
while the SGEESA’s collection covers a period from 1963-1986, with both collections
being incomplete and missing some issues. </p> </scopecontent>
