Example of Warm-up Activity

Chinese Whispers

The class is split into two or more teams, which sit in a circle or row. The teacher
whispers a phrase into the ear of the first student in each circle or row; then they
whisper it into the next student’s ear until the message reaches the last student. Each
student has only one chance to repeat the phrase to their classmate; the last one says the
phrase out loud. The team that gets a phrase right scores a point and the one that scores
more points wins.

This game has a linguistic purpose, as the students practise listening and pronunciation,
and a non-linguistic purpose, reflected in the idea of competing to win.
