Grade 1: Operations and Algebraic Thinking

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.NBT.B.3

Compare two two-digit numbers based on meanings of the tens and ones digits,
recording the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, and <.

Objectives:

1. Students will be able to recognize greater than, less than, and equal to
symbols.
2. Students will be able to use these symbols to compare numbers equal to or
less than 10 as represented by a 10 frame independently.

Prior Academic Learning Relative to Lesson:

1. Students are familiar with determining a larger number from a smaller

number. We practiced this with addition and subtraction. (Holding on to
the larger number and counting up or down).
2. Students are familiar with using a number line to help them add,
subtract, and to visually compare numbers by looking at how far they are
from zero.
