What’s the Fastest Route to School From my House?

1. Information that would answer my question is finding out the distance and time it takes to
get to my school for each route.
2. Information I need to find out is how long each route takes to get to school.
3. The information above relates because they are the same thing.

Routes:
Route 1: Go straight down Florida and don’t take any turns. Google Maps says it is a 9.3 mile
drive and takes 19 minutes.
Route 2: Go straight down Florida and take a right at Bread and then take a left at rd. 251.
Follow that road to get to school.
Route 3: Take the long way downtown and follow that road to 160 to get to school.

When you divide distance by speed, multiply your answer by 60 to get the time in minutes.
Route one takes almost 15 minutes while route two takes almost 18 minutes. Route three I
didn’t even do the math for because I know that this route is really out of the way and takes
twice as long. For each route I had to figure out what the speed limit was to each section and
how long that speed limit lasted. So I had to figure out the distance for each section that was a
different speed limit. Then to figure out the time I had to use this equation: T = d/s = # of hours.
So for route one, row one I took 0.339 ÷ 25 = 0.01356. That is how many hours it took, but to
convert that into minutes I had to multiply it by 60. So 0.01356 × 60 = 0.814.

Route 1 Speed (mph) Distance (miles) Time (minutes)

1 25 0.339 0.814

2 45 3.05 4.067

3 35 4.14 7.096

4 45 1.19 1.587

5 15 0.3 1.2
=14.764

Route 2 Speed (mph) Distance (miles) Time (minutes)

1 25 0.339 0.814

2 45 3.05 4.067

3 35 5.86 10.046
4 45 1.19 1.587

5 15 0.3 1.2
=17.714

Equation: distance=speed·time
Ex: 145 yd at 25 mph
145 yd →miles
0.0823 miles=25 mph·time
time=0.0823
--------- = 0.003292 hrs · 60 = 0.19752 min · 60 = 11.86
