Introduction: To start the lesson I am going to introduce Management
that we can use fractions in everyday life when we want to
split things up evenly. We will have a short discussion Attention Signals
about how this is similar to division and how we can use Explicit rules
those strategies to help us today. about the
chocolate and
Content/Activity: We will start out using counter consistency with
manipulatives. Each student will be given 24 counters (this taking it away if a
number is evenly divisible by multiple numbers). Students student is not
will be given three word problems such as “Mitchell has a following
small bag of 24 m&m’s. He wants to give 1 third of his directions.
m&m’s to josh. How many m&m’s does he give away?”. Give countdowns
They will use their counters and a partner to figure out how Randomly call on
to separate their “m&m’s” in thirds. I will have students students to keep
write the answers of each word problem on their them all
whiteboards to share when they figure it out. Next, I will accountable.
give each student a hershey’s candy bar that each have 12
pre-partitioned pieces. I will ask students to eat 1 fourth of
their candy bar and ask how many pieces they get to eat. I will continue this until all their pieces
are eaten. Students will have to pass how many pieces they found before they can eat any
otherwise their candy bar will be taken away.
Closure: After the candy bars, we will have a quick debrief about how they could use division
or skip counting to figure out how many pieces are 1 fourth of 12.

Assessment: I will have a formative assessment of what the students learned based on the
discussion we have during the debrief.

Adaptations: Students will work with a partner to figure out how to separate their pieces of
chocolate/counters.

Integration: We will be writing full sentences on our white boards to integrate writing and
grammar.
