In this lesson sample, I am teaching ASL students a

lesson that includes signs for the types of

neighborhoods, family members and relatives. A
previous unit on numerals and ordinals is applied as we
talk about birth order of siblings. I offer guidelines, and
then the students are broken into pairs to have the
opportunity to converse about siblings and family
members with peers from the class. I walk around and
monitor each of the conversations, giving praise and
corrections as needed. If a student has no siblings,
he/she must demonstrate negation properties of ASL,
using proper language grammar. A Student-Led Wrap
Up Discussion is student- centered learning activity.
Students are assigned or self-select the role of
discussion leader each week. They pose the questions
based on the student’s learning of the day and guide the
discussion. This form of social learning encourages
student participation and response that can be used in
the classroom.
