Five Types of Introductions

“Inquisitive”
Explain why your subject is important, curious, or interesting.

“Paradoxical”
Explain what aspects of your subject seem improbable. Explain any
strange or unusual perspectives people might have on your subject.

“Corrective”
Explain how your subject has been misunderstood or misrepresented
by others. How will your essay fix these misperceptions?

“Preparatory”
Explain the specific and unique way in which you will discuss the
subject. Warn against any misconceptions about the subject.
Explain why a particular aspect of the subject will not be discussed in
your essay.

“Narrative”
Lead to the subject by narrating a story or anecdote.
