medical imaging, and the Internet are just a few highlights of engineering and
scientific breakthroughs that have improved lives. With the advancement of
technology, the future challenges facing society are becoming increasingly
complex, and their solutions will require an innovative workforce that is diverse in
its education, gender, culture, age, etc. For example, to accomplish the National
Academy of Engineering’s Grand Challenge to engineer personalized medicine,
people of many different backgrounds must work together to ensure no groups’
needs are overlooked. GradSWE advocates for women in graduate education so
that they can confidently excel at the frontier of scientific advancement. A diverse
and balanced workforce of individuals with M.S. and Ph.D. degrees is necessary
to tackle society’s biggest challenges with innovation and creativity, and
GradSWE strives to make this workforce a reality.
● Guidance for Physics Students
○ More and more of us carry around in our pockets a tiny device that represents
one of the most remarkable applications of physics and engineering to our daily
lives. When needed, this device calls on a network of satellites which, because of
their onboard atomic clocks that are accurate to about 1 second in every 2 million
years, and because of our understanding of the effects of special and general
relativity, are able to pinpoint our location to within a few meters from 20,000 km
away. Our interactions with this technology are usually pretty quick and
mundane, but without us really thinking about it, it quietly keeps us going where
we'd like to go.
○ Sorry, we got distracted. The point is, "GPS" stands for "Guidance for Physics
Students."

organizations, enable you to be an agent for progress in your community.
● Promoting Undergraduate Research in Engineering
○ PURE is an interdisciplinary program in the College of Engineering pairing
freshman and sophomore undergraduates with research mentors. The general goal
of the program is to encourage underclassmen to explore research at an early
stage in their academic career.
○ The program pairs up 1-2 undergraduate students with a graduate student or
professor mentor. Each pair will decide on a project to work on throughout the
semester. All undergraduate mentees will write a 1-2 page summary and give a
presentation at the end of each semester on what they have done/learned. Mentors
benefit since PURE is flexible with their schedules, providing them undergraduate
researchers with the desired skill set and inspirations who make great early
additions to a research team. The structure of PURE, including events such as the
Research Presentation Workshop, also trains mentees about the discipline of
engineering research.
● Society for Engineering Mechanics
○ The Society for Engineering Mechanics (SEM) is an organization that promotes
Engineering Mechanics as a major. We bring students together to design and
build mechanical projects and the members decide which projects we pursue
based on their own interests. Social events allow members to take a break from
their studies while getting to know one another. Students also have the
opportunity to meet professors in an informal setting at our general meetings and
professional events.

and industry panels, are intended to provide professional complement to the
academic curriculum. The academic events we plan to hold include
academic skills development seminars. These will allow graduate students
to broaden their existing academic knowledge and help them develop as
researchers and scholars in their field. The social events we hold include
student mixers, cookouts, and potlucks, all of which are geared towards
building a sense of community amongst students while creating a network
of peers that can provide assistance throughout the academic year.
● Student Chapter of the American Meteorological Society at UIUC
