1) According to the essay The Modern Theatre is the Epic Theatre, by Bertolt Brecht, what are
the main differences between the Epic theatre and the Dramatic theatre? (3,0 points)

For this question, you’re expected to:

a) Identify and address the contexts of “Epic (Modern) theatre” and “Dramatic (Greek)
theatre”;
b) Identify two main characteristics (units, audience, spectacle, etc.) of each type of
drama and contrast them;
c) Discuss the alienation effect and mention to which type of drama it belongs to.

2) Write a brief commentary on Susan Glaspell’s play Trifles, and Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for
Godot, considering their context, themes and the aesthetics of their classification of Modern
Theatre. (3,0 points)

For this question, you’re expected to:

a) Identify the context in which the plays were produced;


b) Exemplify two aspects in the play Trifles, discussing its status of Modern Drama;
c) Exemplify two aspects in the play Waiting for Godot, discussing its status of Theatre
of the Absurd.

3) Write a brief commentary on Wole Soyinka’s play The Strong Breed, and Toni Morrison’s
Desdemona, considering their context, themes and the aesthetics of their Drama
classification. (4,0 points)

For this question, your expected to:

a) Identify the context in which the plays were produced;


b) Exemplify two aspects in the play The Strong Breed and associate the chosen aspects
to the idea of Ritual Theatre;
c) Exemplify two aspects in the play Desdemona and compare them to its source text,
Othello.
