Central&Focus:&
The goal of this learning segment is to provide students with information on how they can
become active participants in government. In order to understand the ways in which students
can participate in government, they will first need to have a basic understanding of the form of
government that is outlined by the United States Constitution. Students should already be
familiar with the type of government used in the United States from 11th grade U.S. History and
Government but, in this class they will be conducting a further investigation into the
governmental system. Students will also be introduced to the different political parties that exist
in the United States, Voter Registration Requirements, Youth Voter Turnout, and the Voter Id
Debate. It is important that students are informed about these topics because these different
topics all relate to how students can participate in government. Students need to have a basic
understanding of political parties so that they can decide which political party they will want to
align with when completing a voter registration form. Examining youth voter turnout and the
voter Id debate is also important because students will recognize that individuals their age do
participate in government and that their ability to exercise their vote is not guaranteed if they do
not follow the specific guidelines of the state they are living in when it comes to poll regulations.
Students will gain insight on how to participate in their own governmental system after
completing the varying assessments that correspond with this particular learning segment.

exist!in!the!United!States!today.!This!will!be!done!by!completing!a!close!reading!of!an!
informational!text!that!outlines!the!major!believes!and!platforms!of!both!the!Democratic!Party!
and!the!Republican!Party.!Students!will!exam!these!text!independently.!Some!students!will!be!
assigned!to!read!and!analyze!the!Democratic!Party!text!and!others!will!be!assigned!to!examine!
the!Republican!Party!text.!A!Lexile!Analyzer!was!used!in!order!to!determine!the!difficulty!of!
these!texts.!The!Democratic!Party!text!has!a!Lexile!measurement!of!1400LK1500L.!The!
Republican!Party!Text!has!a!Lexile!measurement!of!1300LK1400L.!Therefore,!ELL!students!and!
approaching!students!will!examine!the!Republican!Party!Text!and!OnKLevel!and!Beyond!
students!will!examine!the!Democratic!Party!text.!These!text!will!be!introduced!and!handed!out!
to!the!students!and!then!the!KWL/KWLS!Charts!will!be!distributed!to!students.!!!A!link!has!been!
provided!below!to!the!readings.!In!this!specific!lesson!only!the!Democratic!and!Republican!

Students!will!be!required!to!complete!a!KWL!chart!while!they!are!examining!either!the!
Democratic!or!Republican!Party!Text.!Teacher!will!model!the!first!two!sections!of!this!graphic!
organizer!which!include,!“What!I!Know”!and!“What!I!Want!to!Know”,!before!student!begin!
reading!their!assigned!text.!In!addition!to!completing!the!KWL!Chart!students!will!be!
encouraged!to!annotate!the!text!by!highlight!and!underling!key!information!and!circling!and!
vocabulary!they!are!unfamiliar!with.!Students!will!then!be!directed!to!begin!examining!their!
text.!After!10!minutes,!teacher!will!regain!the!attention!of!the!class!and!model!how!to!complete!
the!last!section!of!the!organizer,!“What!I!Learned”.!Teacher!will!be!circulating!the!classroom!to!
assist!students!while!they!are!working!on!reading!and!completing!the!KWL!chart.!Teacher!will!

Democratic!and!Republican!parties.!The!TKChart!Graphic!Organizer!will!be!displayed!on!the!
Smartboard!and!teacher!will!call!on!students!to!come!fill!in!the!major!beliefs!and!platforms!of!
the!two!opposing!political!parties.!The!students!who!read!the!Democratic!Party!Text!will!be!the!
“Experts”!in!that!party!and!provide!their!peers!with!information!about!that!particular!party.!The!
