Michael Hilliger - Introduction to 2D Digital Imaging

Greetings, reader. My name is Michael Hilliger, and this book is the

complete exhibition of my “Introduction to 2D Design” coursework! In this
course, I was tasked with designing various art projects. I used numerous
industry standard programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. It
was pretty crazy, and I know you’ll have bounds of fun looking through my
stuff. Perhaps you may even learn a little something about yourself along the
way.

Project 1 - Photo Restoration

My first task for this course was to destroy some perfectly fine photographs, then to throw them into Photoshop to restore them
to their former glory! I even adjusted the colors to make them look better than their scanned counterparts. The initial assignment was
just to restore one photo, but I took care of it so quickly that my instructor challenged me to restore a second one as well.

Project 2 - Tiki Masks

For this assignment, I had to create a 3D rendering of a Tiki Mask. However, we were not using 3D design software- this was all
done in Photoshop! This meant that I had to create a makeshift 3D environment, graph each vertex one by one, and come up with a
neat design and color scheme for the tiki mask. This is a project that really cranked up the challenge for me.

Project 3 - Vector Illustration

This is my sweet dog, Rey. She is a master of dramatic lighting, as can be seen by these images. I had to create a vector version of
her in Adobe Illustrator, simplifying her form into many geometric shapes. The dynamic alterations of light from one spot to the next
meant that I had to be very decisive on how to condense all this information into something that is easy to understand.

Project 4 - Mobile App Design

When I designed the visuals for a media player app, I approached it by emphasizing music notation and transcription. My app,
Transcription Teacher, hypothetically allows the user to convert any song into sheet music, allowing them to play it on a real instru-
ment. This project challenged me not only on the visual aspect of things, but music theory and the psychology of design as well.

Project 5 - Packaging Design

Even before I was introduced to this project, I came up with the idea of an over-glorified toy glove marketed towards children.
The idea was really funny to me, and I had an opportunity to flesh that out in the Packaging Design project. I asked my friend Weston
to act as a model, and with some gimmicky (but controlled) visual ideas, I had a cool-looking box that belongs in the toy aisle.

Conclusion
Michael Hilliger - Introduction to 2D Digital Imaging

I lied to you in the Introduction of this book.

I told you that this contains every single project I created in the “Introduc-
tion to 2D Design” course. The truth is, I left out the final project, and there’s a
good reason why.
You’re holding the final project in your hands right now.
That’s right, this visually interesting book is my final project for this course!
I bet you didn’t even realize it. Unless you’re the professor or a fellow student,
in which case that should have been obvious.
To make the book visually unique, I chose to have white text on prominently
black backgrounds (a reversal of how ordinary books look), and I added neon
bits of magenta and cyan in the background to fill in the negative space with
something visually interesting but not entirely distracting.
Well, that’s it, my friend. There are no more pages in this book. Stop reading.
