RISHIKESH : A Heavenly way to get in touch with the peace and

Adventure of the mind.
Rahmi prabha

Rishikesh in Uttarakhand is a beautiful small

city in the mountains. It is located at the
foothills of Himalaya in Northern India.
Approximately 100,000 inhabitants live in this
city. It's famous for their yoga and meditation
education. The city is full of tourists who look for
spiritual satisfaction, pilgrims and sadhus (holy
ascetic Hinduism men). Also called as the ‘Gateway
to the Garhawal Himalayas’, the town is situated
beside the holy river Ganga and is a famous tourist
spot for not only Indians but for also the foreign
tourists, along with a famous tourist spot it is also
major pilgrimage spot for the hindus. The town is famous for its various shrines and yoga ashrams. Rishikesh also is a among the few places in india that offers a
multitude of adventure sports to its visitors. Rishikesh is a comparatively safe place. This is a holy city stuffed with saffron clad holymen and sadhus. Rishikesh is the
first big town on the Ganges so here the water is clean and safe to bath in. It is believed that bathing in the Ganges washes away your sins. The Ganges (Ganga) is an
incredibly beautiful river and by sitting on the bank you could watch the colours change throughout the day. At dawn and in the morning , it foams white and the
surge of river could be heard from the distance as it tumbles down cold from the Himalayas. The sound is gradually lost as India wakes up. As the day progresses the
river changes to a pastel blue/green just like of the coral seas. Throughout the trip there will always be the feeling of the sacred river in the background. Close to the
rivers sandy banks which is perfect for doing yoga. At night on the opposite bank of the river would be lit by the occasional floating light and would echo to the
rhythms of the bhajans and mantras coming from the ghats. The most interesting of these is the Triveni Ghat - Rishikesh Triveni Ghat with it's giant archway depicting
the chariot of Krishna and its giant white statue of Shiva in the river. At evenings a large mass joins the hundreds of pilgrims who attend the Ganga Arti. At this Ghat
the air is electric with chanting from the orange clad devotees and filled with the smell on incense. The ceremony is of worship, remembrance and hope. Apart from
these things, Rishikesh has lot to offer :
1. Rafting
Rafting on the River Ganga (Ganges) is very popular in Rishikesh. March to June is the ideal season for beginners, while
professionals can opt for July through September. The rafting goes on for several kilometers along the river and the path
is interspersed with rapids, ranging from Level 1 to Level 5. And for daredevils, there's the option of jumping 25 feet from
a ledge into the water. Several local travel agencies offer these combo rafting trips which include an overnight camp on
the riverbank, with an amazing campfire. Rafting is both fantastic exercise and sociable, with each raft accommodating six
to eight people at a time.
2. Yoga
One of the best parts of Rishikesh is its yoga classes. You'll find them all over, from guest houses to ashrams. Here are
some particularly great ones:
Phool Chatti: Meaning 'Land of Flowers', Phool Chatti is located 5 kilometers up the hill from Rishikesh in a tranquil
location. A wide range of yoga courses are offered and courses may vary from one week to up to a year .
Sivananda Ashram: Sivananda Yoga focuses on teaching yoga in a unique way which includes basic asanas, breathing,
relaxation and lot of positive thinking. Sivananda Ashram is named after Yoga guru Swami Sivananda. Founding the
first Sivananda Ashram in Canada in 1959, Swami Vishnudevananda has opened over 60 Sivananda Ashrams across
the globe.
Parmarth Niketen: Founded by Pujya Swami Shukdevanandji, Parmarth Niketan is one of the largest Ashrams in Rishikesh. Located on the banks of the Ganges, it has
a lot to offer tourists and yoga devotees from all around the world. Yoga courses include Pranayama, Surya Namaskaar, Asana etc.

3. Meditation
Rishikesh is one of the best places in the world to practice meditation. Many ashrams offer free stays with daily sessions, and
you will find people staying for months at a time. The Beatles once stayed at the now-closed Academy of Medtiation in 1968.
Their time in Rishikesh was so important to them that the city welcomes Beatles fans making a musical pilgrimage to the city.

4. Bungee Jumping
If thrill and adventure are on your mind, then bungee jumping in Rishikesh is one thing you should try. The
adrenaline rush that this sport gives is second to none. This cliff overlooks a gorge, where the Ganga River flows
through. Trying this 83-meters jump will certainly be one of the highlights of your trip.

5.Camping
Camping in Rishikesh is a thrilling experience; you'll wake up to the sound of the river and the unique birds of the
Garhwal/Himalayan region, and sleeping outdoors is wonderfully refreshing. There are two types of camps, one spacious 3-bed
area and another for single camping tents.
