Reflection

Kaiser:

I really loved my internship with Kaiser. I was put in Labor and delivery and I
really enjoyed it. In my opinion i think it gave me a helpful insight into what a day looks
like being a nurse. The internship was 12 hours so it was really long but it was fine
because if I want to go into this profession then I will need to get use to this. I was a bit
upset that I did not get to see a baby being delivered but I understand that it was super
busy and some mothers would not want a stranger in the room in one of the most
personal and memorable events in their live. There was also an incident where there
was a dad who did not feel comfortable with me being in the room when the nurse was
checking up on the baby but again I understand. Towards the end of the day there was
not a lot of activity going on so I was starting to get tired. There was a lot of walking
involved in this because you had to go room to room to check up on the moms and
babies. That is why they recommend you wear comfy shoes. The staff was very nice as
well as the patients. They gave me advice on what to study and they told me their life
stories about their process in becoming a nurse. They also told me how their schedule
is and I think it is really cool how they can pick out their schedule depending on where
you work. For example, one of the nurse only works for 3 days and the rest they have
off. That is considered full time there and part time is only working 2 days. Of course
they are 12 hour shifts but I think it is so worth it if you would only work 3 days. You can
also work overtime if you’d like to. I can definitely see myself working in this sort of
environment. I would really like to shadow a different kind of doctor just to get more of
an idea of what I really want to be. I really like how Kaiser lets students internship here,
it is very helpful if you are not sure you want to go into the medical field. I would highly
suggest this program to everyone thinking about going into the medical field just so you
can have an idea of what kind of day you are going to have if you decide to become a
doctor or nurse etc. I really appreciate this experience that I got because it was super
fun and educational as well as useful.
Orenco Orthodontist:
For a time I was thinking about becoming a orthodontist assistant because
everytime I would go for my appointment to get my rubber bands change or my wires
change it would always be the assistants doing it. Yeah the orthodontist would tell them
what to do but they would be the ones to do the work. To be honest, it looked pretty fun.
So I decided to ask if i would do a job shadow there. They let me and I loved it. It was
really fun being a part of it because I am comfortable there because I go there so I
already knew the staff. They are super friendly and they gave me great advice if I
wanted to become an assistant. My job shadow was not super long which was fine.
They do not have super long shifts either which is not bad. Some of the assistants work
at multiple practices because they do not get many hours just being an assistant
because the orthodontist has multiple assistants. That would probably be the only
downside to that, having to apply to multiple practices. I think it is a great job and it
looks easy and fun. I am really appreciative that they let me do a job shadow there. It
was very useful since I was interested in that field and I love how the assistants took
interest in me and asked me questions and gave me things to think about and also just
advice in general. I would definitely suggest doing a job shadow here. It will help if you
are not sure what you would like to do and are just exploring your options right now.
