4 Circle the correct words to complete the text.

A night at the opera

I love opera, and despite the high ticket prices, I often go to the theatre to watch them. What I
hate, though, is the disgusting noises that people make while they’re watching. All you hear in
the auditorium is the sound of people noisily 1clearing / cleaning / gasping their throat as if
they are about to start singing. The last time I went, the man next to me clearly had a cold,
2
and kept slurping / snoring / sniffing all the time. In the end, I gave him my handkerchief.
3
And the girl behind me started sighing / hiccupping / tutting, and just couldn’t stop. Her
friend hit her on the back, and she tried drinking water, but it didn’t work. In the end, she had
to walk out. I don’t mind when people 4gasp / cough / sniff in amazement when the action on
5
stage is exciting or shocking, or snore / sneeze / sigh when something sad or romantic
happens, but making horrible noises while people are trying to listen really is a pain!
