Response to Intervention Module

1. What are the two options for identifying students with learning disabilities? Briefly
summarize each one.
➔ The first option is the IQ Achievement Discrepancy Model. This practice waits for
the student to fail repeatedly until there is a large enough gap in the student’s learning
compared to his/her peers. It then calls for the struggling student to take an IQ test to
assess their learning disability.
➔ The second option is the Response to Intervention Approach. In this method,
students who are close to being labeled with a learning disability are called “at risk.”
These students are taken through a three step system that allows the student help even
if s/he falls only a little bit behind his/her peers.
2. List at least four benefits of using an RTI approach with struggling students.
➔ Early Intervention: the earlier a teacher notices a student is falling behind, the easier it
is to identify and fix the disconnect
➔ Identification of LD: the earlier a student gets accurately labeled as having a learning
disability, the easier it is for the teacher to focus on the subject matter
➔ Rules out “Bad Teachers”: the possibility for students being labeled as having an LD
due to substandard instruction is ruled out because of the early intervention
➔ Fewer Students Struggle: if the students labeled as “at risk” are caught at an earlier
grade and are helped before they continue to have developmental delays, the
percentage for students with LD will decrease
3. Compton is a first-grade student at Rosa Parks Elementary School. His teacher, having
administered a universal screening measure, has identified Compton as a struggling
reader. Name and explain the first step in the RTI approach that she should consider
when trying to help Compton. Keep in mind that Rosa Parks uses the standard protocol
approach.

➔ Since he has already implemented the first step in the RTI process, universal
screening, the next step would be to present the student with one standard and
intervene to address an ample range of skills.
4. Assume that your recommendation for Question 3 was implemented; unfortunately,
Compton’s progress continues to be insufficient. Name and explain the next step in the
RTI approach.
➔ The next step in the RTI module would be to give Compton intensive instruction.
Depending on the state’s policies, Compton may go straight to exceptional instruction
or receive further evaluation to identify his learning disability.
