Chain Technologies and its Advancements

Chain Drive - a mechanism in which power is transmitted from an engine, typically to the
wheels of a vehicle or a boat's propeller, by means of a moving endless chain.
Chain Range
British Standard (BS)
This standard covers chain manufactured to suit the British market and markets where a strong
British presence has dominated engineering design and purchasing. The standard is based on the
original Conveyor Chain design.
ISO Standard
Chain manufactured to ISO Standard is not interchangeable with BS or DIN Standard Chain.
This standard has a wide acceptance in the European market, except in Germany. Chain
manufactured to this standard is becoming more popular and are used extensively in the
Scandinavian region.

Hollow Pin Bearing Chain

The hollow bearing pin type chain facilitates fixing attachments to outer links by bolting through
the hollow bearing pins and is suitable for use in all normal conditions. The attachments may be
bolted up tight or held in the hollow bearing pin in a "free" manner. Bolted attachments should
only span the outer link, as a bolted attachment spanning the inner link would impair the free
articulation of the chain.

Deep Link Chain

Deep link-type chains have side plates with a greater depth than the normal chain plates; thus
providing a continuous carrying edge above the roller periphery. When lateral flexing of the
chain is required to negotiate horizontal bend radii, coned bearing pins are employed.

Solid Bearing Pin Conveyor Chain

The solid bearing pin type chain, while having exactly the same gearing dimensions, i.e. pitch,
inside width and roller diameter as the equivalent hollow bearing pin chain, is more robust and is
recommended for use where arduous conditions may be encountered.
Other Types of Chain

Leaf Chain - Leaf Chain is the most simple of steel chains, consisting only of link plates and
pins. This chain has greater tensile strength than roller chains and runs over sheaves rather
than sprockets.

Chain types according to manufacturer’s product

AL Type

Plate configuration and thickness are the same as ANSI roller chain. Pin diameter is almost the
same as ANSI roller chain. AL series (American Light) chain (manufactured to the ANSI B29.9
standard) is constructed from American standard roller chain components. AL series chain is
lightweight chain used for light load lifting applications and machine tools.

BL Type

BL Series leaf chains consist of link plates which are thicker and larger in contour than the AL
Series link plates of the same pitch. The link plates have the same thickness as the link plates of
the next larger pitch size in ANSI roller chains. The pins have the same diameter as those of
ANSI roller chains of the next larger pitch.

LL Type

LL series (European Light – Leaf Light) chain, manufactured according to ISO4347, DIN8152
and NFE26107, is constructed from roller chain components to European standard. Like AL
series chain, EL-LL series chain is a lightweight chain used for light load lifting applications and
machine tools.

Tools use by manufacturers

FB Chain Gauge

The FB Chain wear gauge enables you to track chain wear at each service and take any necessary
action. The FB gauge is a ‘how much worn’ chain gauge, showing chain wear in 1/4 percent
increments from 0% to 4% worn with a red warning box appearing at 2%.
Chain Technology:

RIGID CHAIN TECHNOLOGY - This technology is based on the locking of links to each
other. When the chain is deployed it behaves like a true rigid pushing bar. In the other direction,
the chain unlocks in the drive casing and stores in a reduced space.

The advantages:

 telescopic mechanical jack

 simple mechanics, low maintenance;
 precision, incompressible system, repeatability;
 adapts to temperature, humidity, chemical aggression and dust constraints;
 high load capacity from a few kilograms to several hundred tonnes

SLIP-TORQUE® CONVEYOR TECHNOLOGY - creates very low back-pressure, enabling

you to transport and accumulate products without jamming, scuffing or shingling,

Technology

The coefficient of friction between the rotating roller shaft and loose fit rollers controls
the amount of driving force transmitted to the product. The product weight and roller
selection determines the level of driving force. When products accumulate, the rollers
beneath slip to avoid jamming, scuffing and shingling.

Other Chain Drives:

“H” Series Roller Chains – ANSI “H” series chains are dimensionally identical to ANSI
standard chains except that the side plates are thicker. The heavier side plates provide some
additional fatigue resistance. They are primarily intended for applications where occasional
shock loads are likely to cause fatigue failure in the chain

SH Series Roller Chains – are identical to H series but they have a different pin material, which
is through hardened. The surface hardness is less than that of the carburized pins in the ANSI
standard and ANSI H series chains but through hardened pins provide additional fatigue
resistance, at some slight sacrifice in wear life.
