Assignment 1 - Beam

Name: _______________________ No: ________________________ Due: _______________2018

1. For a UB section, 533 x 210 x 92 (S275) subjected to a bending moment and axial load with axial load equals to
30% of the plastic axial capacity of the beam section. Check the classification of the web according to the EC3 code.

2. Calculate the effective area (Ac, eff) of the class 4 section, UB 457 x 191 x 67 (S355), assuming that this beam section
is subjected to an axial compression load only (i.e. uniform compressive stress) (note: should check both flange and
web elements).

3. Produce the beam design curves (LTB capacity vs. length) for the UB 610 x 229 x 101 (S355). Assuming that the
beam is simply supported and no lateral restraint is provided for the compression flange (Fig. 1). Consider the two
different end moment conditions: (a)  = 1.0 and (b)  = -1.0. Please also include the corresponding elastic lateral
torsional buckling curves which have been discussed in the class for both cases on the same plot. The material
properties of the steel is E = 210000 MPa and  = 0.3. Compare and comment your results with the elastic LTB
results.

4. A three span continuous beam UB 305 x 165 x 54 (S275).has two equal end spans of 6 m and a middle span of 9 m.
If the beam is loaded with uniformly distributed load, calculate the maximum load that the beam can safety carry
using:

a) Technique proposed by Nethercot and Trahair (1976)

b) The equivalent beam method proposed by Schmitke and Kennedy (1985)

Note: Calculate the inelastic in-plane bending capacity of the beam according to the EC3 code
Bending moment diagram of the continuous beam can be obtained by using software or by calculation.
