4. BIBLE READING: Ephesians 5:25-33
Read by Subomi Olowe
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up
for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing[a] her by the washingwith water through the
word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle
or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought
to love their wivesas their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After
all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for theirbody, just as
Christ does the church— 30 for we are members of his body.31 “For this reason
a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will
become one flesh.”[b] 32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ
and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves
himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
5
To all life Thou givest, to both great and small;
In all life Thou livest, the true life of all;
We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
And wither and perish, but nought changeth Thee.
Great Father of Glory, pure Father of Light
Thine angels adore Thee, all veiling their sight;
All laud we would render, O help us to see:
PASTORAL INTRODUCTION
The Minister addresses the congregation
Marriage is a gift of God in creation through which husband and wife may know
the grace of God as His blessing enables them love and support each other in
prosperity and in adversity. As man and woman grow together in love and trust,
they are united with one another in heart, body and mind, as Christ is united with
His bride, the Church. It is a way o f life made holy by God and our Lord Jesus
Christ honoured those celebrating a wedding at Cana in Galilee by His presence,
also performing His first miracle there.
6
The gift of marriage brings husband and wife together in the delight and tenderness
of sexual union and joyful commitment to one another to the end of their lives. It
is given as the foundation of family life in which children are born and nurtured
and in which each member of the family may find strength, companionship and
comfort, growing to maturity in love.
It is based upon a solemn, public and life-long covenant between a man and a
woman, declared and celebrated in the presence of God and before witnesses. No
one should enter into it lightly or selfishly but reverently and responsibly.
In the presence of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, we have
come together to witness the marriage of Emmanuel Irivboje and Folashade
Faith, to pray for God’s blessing on them, to share their joy and celebrate their love.
We pray with them that the Holy Spirit will guide and strengthen them, that they
may fulfil God’s purposes for the whole of their earthly life together.
THE DECLARATIONS
The Bride and Bridegroom stand before the Minister
7
The Minister says to the Couple
The vows you are about to take are to be made in the presence of God, who is
judge of all and knows all the secrets of our hearts; therefore if either of you
know a reason why you may not lawfully marry, you must declare it now.
8
The Minister asks
Who gives this woman to be married to this man?
The Minister may receive the Bride from the hands of the person giving
her away
Emmanuel Irivboje and Folashade Faith, I now invite you to join hands and
make your vows, in the presence of God and these persons present.
The Bridegroom takes the Bride’s right hand in his, and repeats after
the Minister

9
I, Folashade Faithtake you, Emmanuel Irivboje to be my wedded husband,
to have and to hold from this day forward; for better, for worse, for richer, for
poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part,
according to God’s holy law. In the presence of God and these persons present
I make this vow.
I give you this Bible as a token of the covenant made between us this day and
as a pledge of our mutual love

THE PROCLAMATION
The Minister addresses the people
In the presence of God, and before this congregation, E mmanuel Irivboje and
Folashade Faith a nd have given their consent and made their marriage vows
to each other. They have declared their marriage by the joining of hands and
by the giving and receiving of a bible and ring. I therefore proclaim that they
are husband and wife.
Those, whom God has joined together, let no one put asunder
10
THE BLESSING OF THE MARRIAGE
The Husband and Wife kneel
Blessed are you, O Lord our God, for you have created joy and gladness,
pleasure and delight, love, peace and fellowship. Pour out the abundance of
your blessing upon Emmanuel Irivboje and F olashade Faith.Let their love
for each other be a seal upon their hearts, and a crown upon their heads. Bless
their life together; in their work and in their companionship. Finally, in your
mercy, bring them to that banquet where your saints feast for ever in your
heavenly home. We ask this in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy
Spirit. Amen
5 “Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they
produce. 6 Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons
and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and
daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease.7 Also, seek the
peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile.
Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” 8
Yes, this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “Do not let
the prophets and diviners among you deceive you. Do not listen to the
dreams you encourage them to have. 9 They are prophesying lies to you
in my name. I have not sent them,” declares the Lord.
11
10 This is what the Lord says: “When seventy years are completed for
Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you
back to this place. 11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares
the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you
hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to
me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you
seek me with all your heart.
12
There in the ground His body lay,
Light of the world by darkness slain:
Then bursting forth in glorious day
Up from the grave He rose again!
And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me,
For I am His and He is mine -
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.
