the first question. So what do you know about cyberbullying?
<$B>: Okay. Actually cyberbullying is...uh�they use electrical device such as
mobile phone. They use the apps�� Facebook. They tried to type some word. Some word
can attack the person.
<$A>: Okay...... Uhm, what forms aside from text have you seen across these
cyberbullying cases? What other forms? Are there just words or texts or there could
be many more different forms?
<$B>: Sometimes it�s a combination �uhm� they use the photo.
<$A>: Okay�
<$B>: They use the word. Actually it�s the combination of sentence and word lah.
They try to attack the person.
<$A>: Hm�Okay. So� cyberbullying does not only concern electronic devices, but also
concerns internet. Right?
<$B>: Yea. Usually they will do online one lah.
<$A>: Ooh. Usually online.
<$B>: Yes.
<$A>: Okay. So, have you had any experience of being cyberbullied before? Uhm�are
you or were you the victim or the bully.
<$B>: Okay�Actually I�m not the victim. Hahahahaha.
<$A>: So you�re the bully?
<$B>: Okay. No I�m going to bully. It�s my friends ��.It�s my friends last time.
They��uh� he used the indirectly approach.
<$A>: Indirectly approach?
<$B>: Ah�They�He tried to write something about the unfair of the�one competition.
Uh�the competition is the�because of the calculation�the mark calculation�uh huh.
The formula is using the�(gibberish) the organizer used the wrong calcu...uh�
formula, and then come out with the result is quite different. And then after that,
the organizer don�t want care about this. So at the end they used the Facebook to
express they are unsatisfied. They tried to put the photo

<$B>: The photo they put in black and white and write some word like�..They
straightaway say that�uhm�because the organizer, some of them is the link�because
this competition is.. uh.. is the area competition. So, the participant is from
school. So some of the organizer is the senior from the school�so they tried to
help them to protect their right. And then some of them��.they try to
protect�..uh�they tried to protect the�the�first place or second place lah.
<$A>: Oh��
<$B>: Okay. And then when they- some of the senior want to protect their junior.

<$B>: Secondary school. Actually this is a secondary school competition. They want
to protect the��their junior

<$B>: And then they go�because they cannot express, express their emotion and
that�s all. So they straightaway go to the Facebook and then�..he going to put the
picture in black and white, and then write something��actually is indirectly say,
uh�..�Something is changing, is not like last time�. He write �something is
changing, not like last time� � so the word is making�making the person...if we
know the problem, we will know what is going on...

<$B>: So the other school,�
<$A>: So that one is indirect reference to someone?

<$A>: Okay. Besides indirect approach, what other approach are there? Or is there
any? Other? Approach?
<$B>: Uh�The other one is the direct one �okay�okay. For direct one actually�I
personally experienced. Hahahahhaha! So��Okay. Because last time I am the person
who are� also expressed my emotion.

<$B>: Express my�.mean�I not�.satisfied with the teacher.

<$B>: Because the teacher like, she is�

just�...she is.�ah okay. She is the lazy one. Hahhahahaha. She is the lazy one. She
don�t want go to the class�uh... actually in secondary school one week got

<$B>: Uh huh, five periods. Okay. She just go to the class one week, one or two
periods only.

<$B>: And then whole week uh�we just go for the�uh�.do our homework when the class
is going�so,

<$B>: So I expressed my emotion in Facebook, straightaway write, uh�the teacher is
very lazy, is very stupid. Hahahahaha! Okay.
<$A>: So, is that an example?
<$B>: Is very stupid, is not responsible��
<$A>: Okay, okay�
<$B>: And then I go and check in, hahahahahaha!
<$A>: You go and check in?
<$B>: Okay, I go and check in because when I go check in in the Facebook lah. Got
check in right?

<$B>: The location I go and check in, and then get captured by someone and then
straightaway�.the other days, the tomorrow�s, when I write and then is the common
thing. Because some of them go and like, go and comment

<$B>: And your status will pop up in the first�.

<$B>: Then someone is�someone is�feel that thing is wrong, but the person didn�t
tell you the thing is wrong, but�maybe he�because�because I also do know,
uh�someone go and report to the teacher.
<$A>: Oh? So someone reported to the teacher?
<$B>: Uh huh, someone reported to the teacher and I feel......Okay. The other day,
the teacher come�come to uhm...... come call me uh�why�.the teacher asked me lah,
why you write uh�write in the Facebook like this, like this�.. So I didn�t reply
anything, so I also no comment about this, so I straightaway say�uhm, sorry and
then I go back and I deleted the status.
<$A>: Okay. Just now you mentioned cyberbullying as an expression? What does that
mean?
<$B>: Express ?? (is) �express ? (your) emotion la�
<$A>: Oh so cyberbullying is�
<$B>: Like express your emotion, you unhappy�ah
<$A>: So it�s an activity for you to express you emotion.
<$B>: Yes.
<$A>: So does that can be considered as something which�uh�intentional? Or that one
is something, uhm�.subconsciously done. Cyberbullying.
<$B>: Intentional?
<$A>: Uhm, were you aware you were cyberbullying other? Or you weren�t aware of
that?
<$B>: Okay. For last time, actually I didn�t aware that is a cyberbullying.

<$B>: Just when I�when I know this�.this action is like cyberbullying, so I�� I
tried to want to write directly lah� ahhahahaha! So�� I also got did, but sometime�
actually we do the cyberbullying is like human attack. Human attack human. So,
sometime we didn�t realize the thing is happening�uhm� we don�t know that is the
cyberbullying, because we just want to express our emotion, our unhappy, so�and
then uh�.just go and write in the Facebook, and then get some �like�, get some
comments for unhappiness�.hahahahahaha!

<$A>: So cyberbullying only can also give bullies some satisfaction, is that it?
<$B>: Uhm�Okay. For the satisfaction part, maybe you see the comments, who are same
stand with you, same opinion with you, you will feel like� Okay. At least got the
supporter� Hhahahahaha!
<$A>: Yea�Okay. So to the next question, could you tell me what kinds of words/
expressions you consider as expressions of Cyberbullying. It can be words, phrases
or sentences.
<$B>: Okay like just now I said, is the direct one is��uhm��is stupid la, lazy
la�.uhm��That one is direct la, because that word is negative word. So, usually is
direct. For indirect, they will attack the person not directly. They didn�t
uhm�mention the person name
<$A>: Okay.
<$B>: They will straightaway uhm...like say, uh�for example, the person is uh�.. in
term of the face, the head is like what�..is botak one. Okay?
<$A>: Okay�
<$B>: Is wear the spectacle, and then�� the skin color�. Something like also�the
racist also can be considered la, because it�s a human attack. And then�.uh�that�s
all la. Uh�..
<$A>: So the expressions��
<$B>: They�they will talk about the�
<$A>: Appearance.
<$B>: Uh huh, appearance.
<$A>: So they won�t target the�..uhm�� attributes of the person?
<$B>: Yes. Uh��for the starting they will talk about who is this. They will use the
appearance to describe this person.
<$A>: Okay, after that?
<$B>: Okay. For those who are know this person, they will know�..means that if I
write the person like this�..this guy is black, is like what��They will know, okay?
I am writing the person is who?

<$B>: Okay? Maybe uh�. Like you la, you are my friend, okay, maybe you�ll know who
I am writing to�

<$B>: And then��Hahhahahah

<$B>: After that, they will say that, okay? Okay, for example last time, I also did

then��.uhm, is short hair, is who, the face is like��uh�� rabbit or someone. Okay?
And then they��they will write the attribute, say that the person like the boss,

<$B>: For example la, this is for example, for the event, like the boss, no need to
come for the meeting, no need come for the�...not they��.the person is not
contribute anything to the event��

<$A>: So, the expressions, they�.uhm�what are the differences between, uhm�the
expressions in direct and also indirect bull�.cyberbullying.
<$B>: Okay. Indirect or direct?
<$A>: Yea. What�s the difference?
<$B>: Difference.
<$B>: Yea.
<$B>: Okay. If direct, actually is direct, you straightaway talk the person name.
<$A>: Okay�
<$B>: Okay? Mention the personal name. Maybe in the Facebook, or the WeChat.
<$A>: Hm��
<$B>: Straightaway mention the personal name, maybe like��.Mandarin they use, they
try to use the other word, because Mandarin got same sound right? The word.
<$A>: Yea. Yea.
<$B>: Okay? Got same sound. So they try to change the other word like, the name is
uh�.lai, wen ting. They try to change the other word. This also like�indirect��
<$A>: Oh! Different words but similar pronunciation!
<$B>: Uh huh, same pronunciation.
<$A>: Oh!
<$B>: So, uhm�..they will write the name, and then straightaway write the what
he/she did. Yea.
<$A>: Oh. So the expression directed towards uhm� indirect and also direct
bullying, which one is to you, uhm��worse, worser?
<$B>: Worse?
<$A>: Yea. The impact.
<$B>: Okay. For me, for me lah. Personally la, okay? Direct approach is nothing.
<$A>: Direct approach is nothing?
<$B>: Is not impact. No, the consequences is actually uh�.is nothing because
everybody is��maybe everybody is write the same thing. He/ she already feel like
this is common, like I don�t care. Okay? They use the indirect approach maybe
he/she don�t know what is it going on at the back of the person. Means that the�..
<$A>: So they were keep in the dark�
<$B>: Uh huh, the person don�t know�uh� ??????????bully. ??????? (that is, that the
person doesn�t know he�s being bullied behind him).
<$A>: Oh, so he didn�t know he was kept in the dark of him getting bullied?
<$B>: Yea.
<$A>: Okay.
<$B>: He don�t know�..uh, bullied by somebody la. He don�t know actually. So at the
end, maybe�..maybe someone go and tell the person, who are kena (got) bullied one.
Okay? So��uh, that person realized that, uh�..he/ she is involved in these cases
and then, maybe he/she is not know that, uh�..
<$A>: So this one is like a�some kind of betrayal. Is it?
<$B>: ???betrayal? (What is betrayal)
<$A>: Betrayal.?? (betrayed)
<$B>: Yea.
<$A>: He will feel like someone betrayed him.
<$B>: Yea.
<$A>: Oh�.Okay, okay. Nice. So to our next question- How do you see the trend of
cyberbullying in Malaysian context?
<$B>: Trend?
<$A>: Trend. Yea. Is it rising or it�s declining.
<$B>: Okay, for me it�s rising la. Hahahahahhaha.
<$A>: For you it�s rising? Can I know the reason?
<$B>: Because nowadays everybody got the hand-phone.
<$A>: Yea.
<$B>: They less using the two way com�.they� they didn�t use the right way to
express their emotion.
<$A>: Hm��
<$B>: They will use the electrical device, electronic devices to access to express
their emotion�
<$A>: Hm...
<$B>: Uhm�.. sometime they feel like there is fun you know.
<$A>: Fun?
<$B>: Uh huh. Fun.
<$A>: Like entertaining.
<$B>: Ha�yes.
<$A>: Uh, why?
<$B>: Because when you write, you get someone go and like, and then comment�.you�ll
feel like the thing is�.interact. The two way communication is like virtually,
so�..uhm, because they didn�t involve in the, uh�� physical one, so the face to
face one express their emotion, so they go and express in the Facebook or somewhere
else.
<$A>: Hm�
<$B>: The social media.
<$A>: Okay, uhm, so back to the fifth question, in relation to the uhm, kids
nowadays, what kinds of words or expressions you think has the element of
cyberbullying. Do you have any cousins or younger siblings who cyberbullied, uh, in
your opinion, cyberbullied others?
<$B>: Okay. Uh�for the younger generation I don�t have experience about this.
Because it�s too young for me. Hahahahha
<$A>: Okay. For our last question, what are the potential warning signs that a
cyberbully has occurred.
<$B>: Wait, potential sign�..
<$A>: Yea.
<$B>: The person is��okay. The one symptom is for children, maybe they starting to
talk less with their parents.
<$A>: Okay...
<$B>: Means that they less communicate with their parents�..
<$A>: Okay�
<$B>: Because they try to express their emotion in the Facebook, �
<$A>: Hm�
<$B>: Maybe they after school facing some problem, okay? They straightaway express
in the Facebook, the social media, so that�s one of the symptoms for victim.
<$A>: How about for bullies? Hahhahahaha
<$B>: Bully I think is�.
<$A>: Yea. Any symptoms for the bullies�?
<$B>: ??????? (What do you call �something not obvious� in English)
<$A>: Uhm, not so obvious?
<$B>: Uh huh, not so obvious la. The symptom is not so obvious because every time
they can straightaway type what they want. Because is not limited to them.
<$A>: Oh, so their mood won�t change.
<$B>: Uh huh. It�s up to their emotion. If they feel like, okay, this person is
doing wrong and then this person is not follow the rule. Okay? And then they go
back and write lah. Write this person what, what, what, what, what.
<$A>: Oh, okay okay. So back to the prevention, who can prevent these cyberbullying
from occurring.
<$B>: Prevent ah��Hahahahhahahah. The parents have to give more inspections lo�..
to their children.
<$A>: Inspections.
<$B>: Uh uh. Monitor their children --while they�re on the internet
<$A>: Yea.
<$B>: Their Facebook, yea, WeChat, because sometime they do the cyberbullying they
also don�t know there�s a cyberbullying.
<$A>: How about the roles of councilors and teachers at the school?
<$B>: Hm�.okay. For the teacher in the school, they can do like�..talk about
something like the general one, uhm�so they can share the news.
<$A>: Share the news?
<$B>: Uhm, because what we can see from the news, also got several news la,�
<$A>: Yea�
<$B>: About the cyberbullying that can share to the students say this is��
<$A>: A wrong thing to do.
<$B>: A wrong thing to do, yea. So, they have to prevent to involve themselves to
this kind of cases.
<$A>: Okay. So, uhm�how about the councilors?
<$B>: For councilor, they just do something like the talk, awareness talk la.
<$A>: Okay. So aside from parents, teachers, and councilors, what other people can
play a part in preventing this cyberbully.
<$B>: Maybe their friends. Because sometime, like just now I said, when we do the
cyberbullying in social media, they don�t know that thing is actually is�.can bring
some negative consequences. So, maybe the friends know about this, they can inform
to them about this, so�� try to prevent. Uh huh.
<$A>: Okay. So before concluding our interview, as a cyberbully, what extra
insights can you shed on this cyberbullying topic?
<$B>: Okay. For me got benefit. Because maybe they do the cyberbullying, is not
like, bring the big impact. Maybe just the small impact only. Not until make
the��.cause, cause the person go suicide or what. So�.. for me maybe when I do the
cyberbully in the social media, maybe the person will realize that this kind of
action is not reasonable around their friends, their pupil. So maybe they will
change. Okay. If for cyberbullying like ��just now I said, the impact will cause
the person until go and suicide, or will hurt the person. So�that one is the
negative one la. Is no good for me.
