PRESENTATION

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is a romance novel written it by Jane Austen, published for the
first time in 1813. The book is about a love story between two people from different social
status, the context of the novel focuses reader’s attention on women’s role in XIX century
society with all the stuff that a woman has to go through in a world leadered by men.

The name of the book makes reference to the main character’s feelings, the proud Mr.
Darcy, and the prejudices from Miss Elizabeth Bennet. During the development of the
novel they both have to fight against those emotions to realize about the real feelings they
have for each other.

Elizabeth Bennet is a clever and independent girl, the second oldest daughter of five girls,
who has the tendency to judge people on first impressions, which makes her to have a
wrong concept about Mr. Darcy, another main character. Lizzy, as her father calls her, was
educated by him; that’s why she thinks different to her sisters and the rest of the girls do.
She looks in marriage more than just social status; she looks for real love and happiness.

Elizabeth is my favorite character from the book. She is like a neutral person who keeps a
balance between the rational and the emotional field, I think this fact makes her a person
with the capability to fight for her interests based on what she really wants and not what her
mother thinks she needs for her life. At the same time, this is a person who you can keep a
conversation with about any kind of topic, his intellectual capacity was developed for her
interest for reading books instilled by her father. Her freed personality made her an
unpredictable person, someone with the capacity of impression to others in a good way, but
this free spirit, which characterizes her, is also the cause of negative comments from people
about her education.

On the other hand, Mr. Darcy is a wealthy gentleman, his income is about 10.000 a year,
this makes him a perfect target for all the single ladies of the town. Besides this fortune,
Mr. Darcy is known for being owned of Pemberley, one of the largest and fanciest lands in
Derbyshire, England. This man is the opposite of Elizabeth, he cares about what people
think about him, and this reason made him get dudes about his feelings for her, because a
relationship between him and another girl from a lower social class could affect his
reputation, honor and the good name he has in society.

Mr. Darcy, is that kind of person who seems to be someone who he doesn’t really is, he
doesn’t get related with everybody so easily. He is an important man in society and
everybody respect him as a gentleman, his behavior defines the way how people look and
treat him, that’s why he is pretty reserved and prudent, but are these actions which make
people talk about him as a proud and arrogant man. In my opinion, he is an intelligent man
who cares more what people do than what they say, even when, by that time, the word of a
person was worth than any other thing. During the novel Mr. Darcy lets see how passionate
he is, because no matter what people say about him he left behind his proud and shyness to
confess their feelings to Elizabeth. And the most remarkable act was how patient he was
letting things be, showing that his love was real and honest.
