Thinking Maps for Writing Improvement

This proposal aims to investigate whether the use of Thinking Maps can help pupils organize their ideas better when writing. The researcher plans to observe writing samples from Year 6 pupils before and after introducing them to three Thinking Maps - circle maps for brainstorming, tree maps for categorizing ideas, and flow maps for sequencing. By guiding pupils to use these maps to organize their thoughts before writing, the researcher hopes to see improvements in how well pupils develop and connect their ideas. The findings will be analyzed using a writing rubric to evaluate improvements in areas like ideas, organization, and grammar. This approach builds on a previous successful use of Thinking Maps with Year 3 pupils.

The Use of Thinking Maps To Help Pupils Organise Their Ideas Better In
Writing

Nisrin Bt Zainal Abidin

1. Title of your project.

The Use of Thinking Maps To Help Pupils Organise Their Ideas Better In Writing.

2. What you want to find out?

i . To find out if the use of Thinking Maps can help pupils organise their ideas better when
writing.

Ii. Can thinking maps help pupils to organise their ideas better when writing?

3. How do you intend to try to find this out?

I will applied the six main concepts of Computational Thinking in my project. The first step
that I should do is identifying the problem in writing among the Year 6 pupils. The second
step is observing the style of their writing. After having observed their style of writing, I will
choose the suitable Thinking Maps to accommodate the problem. Next, I will guide them
in organising their writing using the suitable Thinking Maps which are essential in the
writing components for the weak pupils. I will introduce all three Thinking Maps such as
circle map for brainstorming, tree map for categorising and flow map for sequencing.
“When these three qualities are applied to mind mapping, they allowed students to
visualise their own thought process, in addition to making the construction of knowledge
personal to them.” (Long & Carlson, 2011). I will combined all these three Thinking Maps
to help them make connections of all their ideas and organise it in a great manner to
achieve a good piece of writing. I will evaluated them after the findings.

4. Does this build on anything you have tried before, or that others have tried?

Yes, I had tried it before for my Year 3 pupils.

5. How will you write up your findings?

Document Analysis. I prepared a pre writing about “A Visit to Pulau Perhentian” without
asking them to create the Thinking Maps. I will soon prepare another writing and they will
fill up their ideas in the Thinking Maps. In the writing rubric, I will scored them based on
their ideas and content, organisation and sentence fluency, spelling and grammar. UPSR
marking rubric.
6. How will you ensure your investigation follows ethics recommendations?

a) Planning daily lesson plan.

b) Monitoring the pupils’ performance.

7. How will this investigation help you develop your Computational Thinking &
Computer Science teaching and integration in your subject area?

During the planning of this project. Identifying the problem in the teaching and learning
and plan the intervention organizedly and further details. Besides that, the pupils are
doing it in VLE Frog which acts as the medium for their practice. The usage of ICT skill is
involve. VLE Frog is the platform based in virtual learning. Instead of using pen and
paper to write, they are using internet access and netbook to type
