We must act now to save the oceans from pollution and climate change, says Charles
PRINCE CHARLES today said that "decisive" action must be taken to save marine life and the oceans.

"We may be able to turn the tide," he said, "but we must act now to stop the 'elephant in the room' —
climate change. How will future generations ever forgive us?" Highlighting the huge problem of dumped
plastic at sea, Charles told the Our Oceans conference in Malta that plastics must be "recovered,
recycled and reused instead of created, used and thrown away".

He added that the Paris Climate Change Agreement had created an integrated approach to the problem.
"I wonder if the oceans' fragility is yet totally truly grasped," he said, pointing out that eight million tons of
plastic enter the sea every year.

"Plastic is indeed on the menu," he said, claiming that anything wild fish eat contained particles of

He said it was "utterly crucial" that the world adopted a "circular economy" of reusing such products as
plastics, but added: "The sense of urgency is still lacking."

The Prince said that unless people appreciated that the recent hurricanes were a "wake-up call", "we
can no longer consider ourselves part of a rational civilisation".
