Course Description
This course is designed as an introduction to the study of the Spanish language and its culture.
Students perform very basic functions of the language and become familiar with some
elements of the Hispanic culture. The four main skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing
are utilized daily to gain knowledge of the language within a given context. An understanding of
grammar is essential and will be emphasized, along with speaking. Spanish 1 is a college-prep
class intended for students preparing to attend college after graduation. Oral class participation
is essential.
Required Text(s)
None- content is derived from “I Can Spanish” program, and authentic and internet resources from
many places are used.

There are four main expectations for students in Spanish 1; they include:

Grades in Spanish 1 are divided into 6 different categories and weighted as follows. Letter grades are
assigned based on the grading scale adopted by Indian Valley High School.
Grading Categories/Weights
Course topics change about every two weeks. Each course topic will end with various assessments (test-
outs) over materials covered. All course material is aligned with the state of Ohio’s Foreign Language
Standards (the 2 C’s of Communication and Culture) and the ACTFL Can-Do Statements.
