The first Earth Day was celebrated nationwide on April 22, 1970 by a coalition of conservationists

who sought to bring attention to such environmental problems as oil spills, pollution, soil
contamination, toxic waste, strip mining, and wasted resources. The event included lectures and
teach-ins, marches and demonstrations, and environmental clean-ups of parks, roads, and beaches.
Also in 1970, the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency in October and the passage of the
Clean Air Act in December focused public attention on problems in the environment. Earth Day gave
the public a forum to show their support for environmental causes and helped turn environmental
activism into one of the strongest social movements of the 1970s.
