Unit 3/Assignment 2 - Research

Types of questions
I started off by coming up with some questions for my questionnaire, I started
off by creating my questionnaire because it is a very good way of collecting
information. The first question I came up with was a simple question and this
was "what age are you", as I am doing my research about cyber bullying I
wanted to find out what ages are most effected, asking the age was a very
good way of doing this as it gives me an age range. As I was asking for the age
this will change the answers of the later questions and give me a round about
age where cyber bullying takes place the most.
The next question I came up with was "have you ever been cyber bullied" this
is a good question because it allowed everyone to answer the overall reason
for the questionnaire early and once I have there age I will know if they have
been cyber bullied, I think that most people that are older will have not been
cyber bullied as much as the younger people, this is because I feel that since
the new age of internet came out and more young people are being allowed
on the internet un supervised.
The next third question I asked was "If you have been cyberbullied, did you
report it to anybody". This question again is a multi-choice question as well as
a text box question so that users can tick a box but also add on then end of it
as well if they would like to have their own personal say in the matter this
allows also what other users, with this sort of question users can explain why
they didn't go to people and report it but it's important to understand why it's
important to stop and start thinking about the different aspect in which will be
talked about others but I picked this question so that I can find out a bit more
from the stories that have been told to me what this is all about and if
somebody has been bullied it's nice to see what users are all about and how
this is shown to a wide range of people and how this information could be
really important to how users were used for what they were needed for but
there is aspects that not even I could of thought of and by thinking this it
means that it has, this topic will be one of the key ones since it explains why
people are being bullied and how it can be adjusted by people so that it helps
people out and why it's important to speak up about it.
"If you didn't report it, and were cyberbullied, why didn't you report it". This
question just another multi-choice question as well as a text box question so
that users can tick a box but also add on then end of it as well if they would like
to have their own personal say in the matter this allows also what other users,
with this sort of question users can explain why they didn't go to people and
report it but it's important to understand why it's important to stop and start
thinking about the different aspect in which will be talked about others but I
picked this question so that I can find out a bit more from the stories that have
been told to me what this is all about and if somebody has been bullied it's
nice to see what users are all about and how this is shown to a wide range of
people and how this information could be really important to how users were
used for what they were needed for but there is aspects that not even I could
of thought of and by thinking this it means that it has, this topic will be one of
the key ones since it explains why people are being bullied and how it can be
adjusted by people so that it helps people out and why it's important to speak
up about it and why these people didn't overall allowing us to see why how
they acted and how this could be a major effect on users.
The fifth question I asked was "What school/college/work place do you
attend", so for example a school, university or even work place, I did this
because it gives me a great understand of where this is most commonly
appearing and so by doing this it also me some insight into where the main
cause is and how to overcome this with its appearance and how it looks when
using a wide range aspects to make sure this is covered with a wide range of
detail, and what will really need to be focused on if that is so and by doing this
I will have uncovered a wide range of information that will be used for aspects
that I can talk to that particular age group or area of work to be more place of
work.
The sixth question I asked was "What's your gender". With this question I can
ask a wide range of people and find out which is the most common out of the
two which has been cyber bullied allowing me to focus on why boys are bullied
more than girls or the other way round and so with this I can see what is really
needed to be done and how this is being used for my own work and why this is
useful for aspects such as interviews so that we can ask users what they would
like to use for they own work and how this is going to be used for a wide range
of users and how this is looked at by the audience who will be watching the
show.
Questionnaire
For my questionnaire I have already got the questions picked, these 6
questions will be given out to the public, I am either going to put it on a
website online that people complete surveys on, websites like SurveyMonkey
do this well.
Here is what my questionnaire will look like
What age are you?
….............................
Have you ever been cyber bullied?
Yes ( ) no ( )
If you have been cyberbullied, did you report it to anybody?
Yes ( ) no ( )
If you didn't report it, and were cyberbullied, why didn't you report it?
…......................................................................................................................
........................................................................................................................
........................................................................................................................
........................................................................................................................
........................................................................................................................
......................................................................................................................
What school/college/work place do you attend?
…...................................................................
What is your gender?
Male ( ) Female ( ) other ( )
Collate
I printed off 6 different sheets and asked people within my local area for their
help in filling out this questionnaire and so by having this complete I am able to
see what my peers around me feel and act around different situations for
cyber bullying, allow me to explore what happened to them in the past and
how I can use this for my TV program and so by doing this I can be able to see
what is great to add in the program and adjust it so that so that it covers the
needed aspects for myself.
Evaluate
Overall around 50% of the people that answered my questionnaire answered
the questionnaire and said they had been bullied and only 20% of them had
reported the bullying. 60% of the people that answered that they had been
cyber bullied were female or other, this shows the statistic that I later
researched that females are cyberbullied more than males.
Web
When researching on the web I found many different forms of cyber bullying,
as bullying can be a wide range of things it is important to know what these
are.
1. Exclusion
Exclusion is the deliberate act of leaving you out.
Exclusion is the deliberate act of leaving someone out.
Exclusion can happen in a number of ways:
 Your child might be excluded from friends’ parties or activities.
 Your child’s friends are having online conversations and tagging other
friends but not them.
 Your child isn’t using social networking sites or doesn’t have a
smartphone and is deliberately excluded from conversations by others
because of this.
2. Harassment
Harassment is a sustained, constant and intentional form of bullying
comprising abusive or threatening messages sent to your child or to a group.
This is a very dangerous form of cyberbullying. It can have serious implications
for your child’s wellbeing. The messages are generally unkind or malicious, can
impact their self-esteem and confidence, and can make them fearful. The
constant messaging means that there is no respite from the cyberbully. The
cyberbully makes extreme effort to cause fear and pain.
3. Outing
Outing is a deliberate act to embarrass or publicly humiliate your child or a
group through the online posting of sensitive, private or embarrassing
information without their consent.
Outing can happen in a variety of ways and the information revealed can be
serious or trivial. Even reading out your child’s saved messages on their mobile
phone can be considered a form of outing. Personal information should not be
shared and if someone reveals private information deliberately be sure your
child knows to report it as cyberbullying
4. Cyberstalking
This form of cyberbullying can extend to the cyberbully making real threats to
your child’s physical wellbeing and/or safety. Cyberstalking can also refer to
the practice of adults using the Internet to contact and attempt to meet with
young people for sexual purposes. It is a very dangerous form of cyberbullying
and can have serious consequences if something isn’t done immediately to
stop it.
5. Fraping
Fraping is when somebody logs into your social networking account and
impersonates your child by posting inappropriate content in their name.
Fraping is a very serious offence, which many people believe to be funny and
entertaining, but it’s not. Impersonating somebody online and ruining their
reputation can have serious consequences. Remember Google never forgets so
everything rude or otherwise posted online will never be fully gone, even if
deleted.
6. Fake Profiles
Fake profiles can be created in order for a person to hide their real identity
with the intention of cyberbullying your child.
The cyberbully might also use someone else’s email or mobile phone to
cyberbully them. This would make it appear as if someone else has sent the
threats. The cyberbully is afraid in case their identity is revealed, therefore
they choose to use fake accounts. This usually means that the cyberbully is
someone that your child knows very well, because if they didn’t know them,
the perpetrator wouldn’t have to hide their identity.
7. Dissing
Dissing is the act of sending or posting cruel information about your child
online, to damage their reputation or friendships with others.
It can also include posting material online such as photos, screenshots or
videos. The cyberbully wants to put your child down, so draws attention to
what they are saying about them to make other people think they’re not cool.
The cyberbully is usually someone your child knows. This can make it really
upsetting.
8. Trickery
Trickery is the act of gaining your child’s trust so that they reveal secrets or
embarrassing information that the cyberbully then shares publicly online.
The cyberbully will ‘befriend’ your child and lead them into a false sense of
security before breaking their trust and sending their private information to a
third party.
9. Trolling
Tolling is the deliberate act of provoking a response through the use of insults
or bad language on online forums and social networking sites.
The troll will personally attack your child and put them down. Their main aim is
to make them angry enough to act in the same way. Trolls spend their time
looking for vulnerable people to put down. Usually they are looking to make
themselves feel good by making others feel bad.
10. Catfishing
Catfishing is when another person steals your child’s online identity, usually
photos, and re-creates social networking profiles for deceptive purposes.
A catfish is someone who wants to hide who they are. They will look at your
child’s social networking profile and take any information they want to create a
fake persona. Sometimes they will only take your child’s photos and use fake
names and information; at other times they could take their name and
personal information. It can be hard to understand why a catfish does this, but
it is important to know that they are potentially damaging your child’s online
reputation.
Please share this blog post with other parents you know so that they can
inform themselves on the 10 forms of cyberbullying. Thank you for being a
good digital citizen!
There are other forms of cyber bulling aswell. These are things such as black
mailing, these are more serious and can be prosecuted against
Blackmail and grooming
We have had many complaints from young people that new "friends" online
have tried to pressure them into taking their clothes off and filming or taking
images of themselves. Threats have been made that their parent will be told
embarrassing things if they don't take part or they will send the images to
everyone they know if they do not do it.
This is an offence called "grooming" in the UK and people who have been
found guilty of "grooming" have been jailed. Remember: everyone you meet
on the internet is a stranger and you need to keep personal things personal to
you, don't share your secrets with other people and if anyone asks you to do
anything that makes you feel uncomfortable then don't do it.
We often hear of people in relationships trying to make their boyfriend or
girlfriend send sexting images of themselves to prove they love them or want
to be with them. It is against the law for anyone under the age of 18 to take,
send or redistribute pictures of anyone under the age of 18.
CEOP is The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre and they
investigate cases of sexual abuse and grooming on the internet. You can report
incidents by clicking the red button on the top right-hand corner of the CEOP
website. Although the police can get information from your computer's hard
drive, it is helpful if you don't delete anything until the police have decided
whether they need it as evidence.
Government statistics
I was able to find a good amount of government statistics online, the site I-safe
give very good statistics on cyber bullying, the government is a very reliable
source of information and can give a lot about the topic I have chosen, the
information that was gathered was collected in 2004 so some of the statistics
may be off and may have changed over the years but this doesn’t mean the
information that is provided is useless.
Here are the stats:
 42% of kids have been bullied while online. 1 in 4 have had it happen
more than once.
 35% of kids have been threatened online. Nearly 1 in 5 have had it
happen more than once.
 21% of kids have received mean or threatening e-mail or other
messages.
 58% of kids admit someone has said mean or hurtful things to them
online. More than 4 out of 10 say it has happened more than once.
 53% of kids admit having said something mean or hurtful to another
person online. More than 1 in 3 have done it more than once.
 58% have not told their parents or an adult about something mean or
hurtful that happened to them online.
These statistics are all about children and cyberbullying, the thing is about this
is that children are not the only people that can be cyberbullied, this could be
done at any age and this is very important for people to know, in my
programme I will let this be known but not take any of the weight away from
the fact that it is mainly children that get targeted.
The Harford County Examiner also have some statistics on cyber bullying:
 Around half of teens have been the victims of cyber bullying
 Only 1 in 10 teens tells a parent if they have been a cyber bully victim
 Fewer than 1 in 5 cyber bullying incidents are reported to law
enforcement
 1 in 10 adolescents or teens have had embarrassing or damaging
pictures taken of themselves without their permission, often using cell
phone cameras
 About 1 in 5 teens have posted or sent sexually suggestive or nude
pictures of themselves to others
 Girls are somewhat more likely than boys to be involved in cyber
bullying
I-safe also have released tips on how to keep stay away from cyber bullying:
 Tell a trusted adult about the bullying and keep telling until the adult
acts.
 Don't open or read messages by cyber bullies.
 Tell your school if it is school related. Schools have a bullying solution in
place.
 Don't erase the messages 'they may be needed to take action.
 Protect yourself 'never agree to meet with the person or with anyone
you meet online.
 If bullied through chat or instant messaging, the 'bully' can often be
blocked.
 If you are threatened with harm, inform the local police.
Hits on a website
Getting hits on a website is very important, to collect this information I used
YouTube. YouTube is a very good platform as it gives you the video views
straight away, this lets me get the hits from a video straight away, I picked out
a few videos as I want to get a good Idea of what makes them get so many
views.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmQ8nM7b6XQ
The first video I picked was a short video about cyber bullying, it has 4.8 million
views on it, this is very good for a YouTube video as they tend to do bad
compared to other videos on the website. The video shows a girl that is being
cyber bullying and then at the end it shows people helping her, this is a good
message for people as it shows what you should do when someone is being
cyber bullied.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkGXzw9QzFI&t
the next video I picked was a film, this film was re uploaded to YouTube on a
random channel, this means someone has just recorded the video and
uploaded it for themselves. The video has 377k views, this is because it isn't
the official video and isn't uploaded on an official account. I also think it got
less views because it is a longer video, overall people on YouTube don’t have a
long attention span so the shorter a video is the more times people will watch
it all the way through, so if I was going to upload my own video I will want to
make it shorter than a full-length film.
Responses to advertising campaigns
H&M released an advertising campaign that showed a black child wearing a
jumper that stated he was "the coolest monkey in the jungle", as soon as the
images went online they were getting backlash for what they had said, H&M
released a full statement saying that they are sorry.
There were
many people
expressing
their opinions
on what H&M
had released
and there
were a lot of
celebrities
saying it was
outrageous
and
disrespectful to release what they did. The backlash that H&M got was very
important to look at as it helps company's not do stuff like this, overall, I do not
think what they released was racist and the hoodie should not be seen as this
as if it was someone of any other race they would be fine with it, just because
the child is black doesn’t make the statement racist and people that think the
word monkey is racist is just virtue signalling, the word monkey has always
meant one thing and if it has been used in a racist way it should not keep those
ties. This is like what Hitler did with the swastika, before he made it the Nazi
flag it was a sign used in many different religions and was a simple of good
look, once Hitler changed the meaning it never came back to mean good luck,
this should not be done to the work monkey as it is not racist at all.

This image shows the mother of the child stating that she does not think the
top was racist and people were just crying wolf at what they thought was
racist, I agree with what they mother says but overall this was blown way out
of proportion, this is because if all the big celebrities swaying the publics
opinion of what was done.
Overall, I feel like if I was going to create an advertisement I would want to
make sure I check for any of this stuff and make sure that we don’t do anything
that could be controversial.
Film Review:
Films are one of the most watched type of information about certain topics.
When researching into my topic I could find several films that was relevant.
One of them was called ‘Cyber bully’. After looking at the film rating it was
rated 5.8/10. For a type of film like this it has very useful information in it. For
example, it can show the audience the dangers of talking to people you don’t
know over the internet, the dangers of sending people messages that will
make them feel depressed etc. These films were shown in loads of schools all
over the world meaning that it’s the best way for it to be viewed by the target
audience as well.

Programme ratings
I was able to find a wide range of information on programme ratings that are
very helpful for me to use to show off what it really is and how its shown to a
wide range of aspects and why these programs about cyberbullying where is
perfect for the show to be shown without having to cost too much money, so I
thought of going over a few websites on this topic and found all of this
information I think that these will be very benefitable to myself and others that
will be working on this topic with me and so by doing this it will have a great
way of showing of what is being shown.
Audience measurement measures how many people are in an audience,
usually in relation to radio listenership and television viewership, but also in
relation to newspaper and magazine readership and, increasingly, web traffic
on websites. Sometimes, the term is used as pertaining to practices which help
broadcasters and advertisers determine who is listening rather than just how
many people are listening. In some parts of the world, the resulting relative
numbers are referred to as audience share, while in other places the broader
term market share is used. This broader meaning is also called audience
research.
Gender and sexual orientation
Overall from stats released girls are cyberbullied more then makes, this is
Cleary shown in on the chart, either way I do not think one gender should be
helped more than the other which this chart may do, I think both genders
should be equal and should be shown to both be cyber bullied and both should
be helped.

The next statistic shows how people are cyber bullied by sexual orientation,
this is represented in heterosexual, they did this by asking if they were
heterosexual or not, this works well as they aren't asking them to disclose their
sexual orientation just asking if they are straight or not. Overall people that are
not straight are cyber bullied more than people that are straight.
 Nearly half (42 percent) of LGBT youth reported being harassed or
bullied online, three times more than non-LGBT youth. 27 percent
reported feeling unsafe online.
 One in four LGBT youth said they had been bullied or harassed online in
the past year because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. One
in five experienced similar harassment via text message.
 A third of LGBT youth had been sexually harassed online, four times as
many as their non-LGBT peers.
Demographics
While demographics such as age, gender and location are still valuable starting
points for separating data, today’s powerful data tracking platforms can
provide businesses with a more comprehensive understanding of their
customer’s behaviour including important factors such as education, lifestyle,
interests and attitudes. What does my ideal customer do throughout their
day? What factors are most likely to influence their purchasing decision?
Which behaviours could signify an intent to buy? Once identified, marketers
can use this information to create detailed personas of the consumers most
likely to require a specific product or service for myself.
Product market
The marketplace in which a final good or service is bought and sold. A product
market does not include trading in raw or other intermediate materials, and
instead focuses on finished goods purchased by consumers, businesses, the
public sector and foreign buyers. My cyberbullying video could be placed on a
specific market, this could be something like schools or colleges, this will mean
I can get my video shown to the people that need it.
Content
Content in cyberbullying videos is very important, I will want to show the
different ways someone could be cyber bullied and show different ways of
resolving it, the content in other cyberbullying videos help with what I am
creating, a video that I used in the hits on websites sections also help as they
give me a good idea of what sort of video I should create.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmQ8nM7b6XQ
The amount of content I can put in the video is important, as I don’t want to
over saturate the video, I want to make it a balanced video that can keep
viewer attention
