Preface

This volume is a compilation of daily lesson plans in physics to help physics teachers in
their day-to-day teaching. These daily lesson plans contain the basic materials that
a teacher needs to implement a lesson. A lesson plan has five parts: objectives,
subject matter, learning activities, assessment, and assignment. The general
objectives intended to be achieved, as well as the specific objectives of the day’s
lesson are spelled out. The topic for the day as well as suggested references and
materials for the lesson are described. The learning activities incorporate
activities to start or to motivate, suggestions on how to go about the class activity
and the strategy to be employed for the day, some suggested discussion questions,
statements of the concepts and principles, and specific values and applications
related to the topic on hand. Sample assessment questions and assignments for the
next day are also included.

The first two pages contain the five parts described above. In addition, the following
materials are also included in a daily lesson plan whenever appropriate or necessary:
student activity sheets which describe the learning activities that the class will perform;
handout for the teacher to give her some suggestions and background material for a
deeper understanding of the concepts and principles as well as answers to some of the
questions/issues raised; and student handout to give students additional information on
the activities they are to perform. Each of these additional materials start on a new page
for easy reference and to make it easy for the teacher to make photocopies if she so
desires.

The lesson plans suggest different strategies for active learning which include:
constructivist strategies such as those that probe student’s prior views and conceptual
understanding, practical work, issue based and problem-based strategies, questioning
techniques, small group and cooperative learning strategies. Background material on
these strategies are included in the teacher materials when necessary.

These lesson plans were developed in a workshop participated in by physics teachers and
educators sponsored by the Bureau of Secondary Education in collaboration with the
University of the Philippines National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education
Development (UP NISMED).
