As students read through Lesson 10.1, have

them jot down one question they have about
lesson content. As you work through the
lesson with the class, have students note the
answers to their questions. At the conclusion
of the lesson, ask students to share their
questions and answers with the class. If
students had questions that were not
answered in the text or during class
discussion, record the questions on the board
and answer them. You can also use the
following tips and activities below to further
reinforce lesson concepts.

Land Cover and Land Use

Differentiated Instruction Struggling

Students

Discuss with students the types of land
cover and land use identified in Figure 1.
Then, point out the connections between
the land cover types in Figure 1 and Figure
2.

Ask What types of land cover were

most common in the United States in
2012? (Federal land, forest land, and
rangeland)

Ask How do people use forested land?

(Harvesting wood, wildlife, fish, nuts, and
other resources)

Urbanization
Description Resources Pacing

Inquiry

Have students read the information under

Urbanization. Then, point out the information
in the second paragraph under the subheading
Continuing Urbanization. Have students
work in pairs to create a circle graph that
shows how the current U.S. population is
divided among rural, suburban, and urban
areas. (Students will need to infer that 20
percent of the population is rural, based on the
information provided in the paragraph.)
Completed graphs should show that the U.S.
population is currently 30 percent urban, 50
percent suburban, and 20 percent rural.

Ask At the current time, 80 percent of the U.S.

population lives in urban and suburban areas.
Has this percentage increased or decreased
since 1950? By how much? (Increased; 15
percent)

Urban Environmental Impacts

Description Resources Pacing

Real World
Have a brief discussion of each of the urban
environmental impacts described in the
section. Then, direct students’ attention to
Figure 6. Help students choose the best
description of the area in which they live from
the types of land cover on the x-axis of the
graph.

Ask Which of the areas on the x-axis would be

warmer than your area on a hot summer
afternoon? (Answers will vary based on the
area students live in.)

Ask Which of the areas would be cooler?

(Answers will vary based on area students live
in.)

Have students write a short paragraph that
answers the question “What environmental
impacts are associated with urbanization?”
Students should include at least one positive
impact of urbanization and at least one
negative impact of urbanization. Then, have
them complete the Lesson 10.1
Assessment.

Remediation
Have students rewrite each of the
lesson’s knowledge and skills statements
in their own words. Call on students to
share their responses with the class.
