Pawling Resource Center Hits a New

Milestone
On Monday, March 26, Pawling celebrated the 42nd anniversary of the
incorporation of the Community Resources and Service Center, now known as
the Pawling Resource Center (PRC). The organization was founded by a group
of Pawling clergy, led by John Brown and The Rev. Ralph Lankler, who joined
forces to create a vehicle for helping Pawling churches and the community with
areas of need.

Today, the PRC operates six days a week and provides a safety net with
services for community members in need. Among the signature programs
available through the Pawling Resource Center area food pantry, rides to
medical appointments, rides to shop for grocery items, homebound delivery of
Food Pantry items for those unable to travel to the Center, holiday distributions
of food and clothing, loaning medical equipment for those in recovery or
spending their final days at home with loved ones, and referrals to social
services.

The PRC depends upon volunteers to assist in delivering these valuable

services. Residents are invited to consider volunteering in the food pantry or as
a driver. As a not-for-profit organization that depends upon contributions and
grants to fund its programs, the PRC is grateful for the generosity of its
supporters. Donations may be sent to the Pawling Resource Center at 126 East
Main Street, in Pawling. Donations of food, paper goods, and personal care
items are also welcome and may be brought to the Center at the above
address. Additional information about the PRC, its services, and mission may
be found on our website at PawlingResourceCenter.org, or by calling (845)
855-3459.

Ed Bergstraesser from AT&T bringing in donations of Food for Thanksgiving

We couldn't do it without them...

AT&T, a corporate leader in charitable giving, has pledged $5,000 to the PRC
for 2018. Their dollars will support the purchase of food items, especially hams
and turkeys and other nutritious foods to enhance the food pantry’s ability to
help with holiday distributions. “It’s been a real pleasure working with the
Pawling Resource Center over the years, especially around holiday time,” said
Ed Bergstraesser, external affairs director of AT&T. “The foodstuffs and other
items offered by the Resource Center are critical to many area residents, and
AT&T is proud to be a long-term part of the program and a corporate citizen of
the Pawling area.”
PRC received a gift of $1,210 from the sale of tee shirts by the group of
Pawling merchants that were featured in our last newsletter. The “Snazzy” T’s
were sold at Family Quick Stop, and the generous participating businesses
include: Tap House Tavern, Family Quick Stop & Gas, McGrath’s Tavern,
O’Connor’s Public House, The Blue Olive, Village Pizza, The Bakeria, Vinny’s
Deli & Pasta, Gaudino’s Pizzeria and McKinney & Doyle.

The Pawling Kindergarten classes visited on March 19 and 20, with each
child was clutching a bag of toothpaste, which they donated to the PRC. Terry
Ariano led the children of each class through the center explaining how the
refrigerators and freezers get filled, and how the food pantry works. They got to
guess what the building used to be, by looking at the barn doors, the horse
stalls and hay bale hardware and water troughs! After getting a tour of the back
rooms, they handed over their precious cargo and sang us a song, “Oh what a
beautiful morning,” which brought a few tears to staff and volunteers eyes. It
was a fun and educational visit, and altogether they donated 397 tubes of
toothpaste!

Joe Downey of Downey Auto Repair, Inc. of Pawling posted on Facebook

recently that if a 2005 Jeep Liberty sold that weekend, he would donate $1000
to the PRC – creative marketing! Not only is this a great way to increase sales,
it is wonderful for folks to see how one business can support an organization
like the Resource Center. As a result, the PRC received a check for $1000 this
Thursday! Thanks for your great generosity, Joe!
Our food pantry receives hundreds of pounds
of donated food each week from Hannafords,
Acme (through St Andrew’s food pantry in
Brewster), and from Trader Joe’s (through
Putnam CAP in Brewster). Volunteers Vinny
Basirico and Jane Violon pick up donations
weekly from Hannaford and Acme, then deliver,
sort and shelve the food at the PRC. The
donations include meat, fresh produce, dairy
items, breads and desserts. This spring, the PRC
also received weekly donations of fresh organic
eggs from Silver Cricket Farms and Freville
Farms. The generosity of these farms and
grocers is what makes it possible to continue to
offer a variety of fresh and nutritional products in
the Food Pantry.
Easter Sunshine Baskets Bring Joy to Needy Children

Pawling Resource Center assisted community members in need with a special

holiday distribution of food at their food pantry and Easter baskets for needy
children. Easter Baskets were distributed to 35 children of food pantry clients,
and were chock full of wrapped candy and chocolate bunnies. Twenty seniors
also received Sunshine Baskets during this time, as well.

Annual Boy Scout Food Drive A Big Success!

Pawling Boy Scout Troop 34 performed their annual magic by soliciting and
collecting bags of food from Pawling village residents for the Pawling Resource
Center food pantry. On April 7 the scouts placed bags on residents’ stoops with
an explanation of the project and recommending types of foods to donate. On
April 14th the boys returned and picked up the filled bags and brought them to
the PRC. There the sorting, date-checking and shelving process required all
hands on deck, until all the food was shelved.

Scout troop leader Maura Kemmer reported that scouts Tyler Kemmer, Dalton
Woodin, Joseph Scott, Wesley Johnson, Riley Hausen, and Charlie Krajeski
participated in the drive this year. Parent volunteers included Maura Kemmer,
Michael Kemmer, Chrissy Woodin, Monica Hausen, Pete Quartironi, Tom
Johnson, Trish Johnson and PRC volunteers Bette Slocum, Yajaira Garcia,
Holly Oths and Christine also helped out. This year the scouts collected 2971
pounds of donated food items! “This annual event really helps keep our food
pantry filled with lots of nutritious choices of canned foods, pastas and tomato
sauce, tuna, cereals, and many other necessities – it gives people a wide range
of choice in their visit to the pantry.” Observed PRC director Terry Ariano. The
Pawling residents once again showed their generosity in contributing to this
awesome event, and the scouts were tireless in collecting and sorting the food
– thanks to all who participated!

Another Not-For-Profit Worth Knowing About!

There are so many wonderful organizations in Dutchess County that care for
those in need. Although we think the PRC is pretty special for all we do in our
own community, we wanted to highlight other organizations that are worthy of
attention.

This month: Rebuilding Together Dutchess County

Rebuilding Together is a leading national nonprofit in safe and healthy housing

with more than 40 years of experience. They bring volunteers and communities
together to improve the homes and lives of low-income homeowners.

Wishing Them Well...Saying Goodbye to Volunteers Martha and

Don Rink

After thirteen years of volunteering untold hours to the PRC, Martha and Don
Rink have decided to slow down a bit. They have thoroughly enjoyed picking up
food from Hannaford twice a week and delivering cases of food to the Pawling
Resource Center, carefully stocking the freezers and fridges. Also, after
apportioning some of the breads and pastries, they would deliver them to the
Office for the Aging’s weekly Senior Drop In Center and to the Kings Apartment
residents. They loved interacting with the seniors there.

Hailing originally from Buffalo, New York, Marth and Don have been married for
63 years. Don worked for Union Carbide, and when he was transferred to work
in Tarrytown they relocated to Yorktown. Their two daughters attended school
there. The Rinks discovered Pawling when they began raising goats, and
bought them from Mr. Chapin, who lived on what is now Chapin Lane in
Pawling. They used to drive up to Pawling with the goats in their station wagon
to Mr. Chapin’s to have the goats examined and bred each year, and fondly
remember the stares they got driving up 684! They decided to move to Pawling
in 1980, after their girls graduated from high school.

When they lived in Yorktown, Martha volunteered for 17 years at Northern

Westchester Hospital. When they moved to Pawling she eventually gave that
up and got involved in local organizations. She has been a member of Ladies
Auxiliary and the Historical Society of Quaker Hill and Pawling for many
years. Don retired 15 years ago. He is an avid golfer, and served as Golf
Commissioner in Pawling for a number of years.

Martha and Don got involved with the Pawling resource Center after borrowing
medical equipment during an illness. They wanted to help out in some way after
the incident. Now, thirteen years later, it’s time to say good-by. “The PRC is so
grateful for their years of service,” says Terry Ariano, Executive Director, “and
we will miss them.”

Winter 2018 is History! Finally!

The PRC is putting away the winter coats, after many members of the
community received warm outerwear this winter and spring! This season the
PRC gave away approximately 300 donated coats and sweaters, which hang
along the entryway to the Center for anyone to browse and choose.
Community-minded individuals knitted baby hats and children’s hats, mittens
and scarves, which were very popular and much appreciated by those who
received them, and The Pawling Engineered Products employees also donated
new hats mittens and scarves. Thank you to all who contributed these much-
needed items.
STUFF THE BUS IS COMING ON JULY 21st!

Look for more info about this annual Summer event in the weeks
to come.

Thank you to all of our supporters!

Special thanks to the following organizations for their help in making the
Pawling Resource Center a success...
