Exemplary Teacher Observation Reflection Form

Teacher Candidate for Science Endorsement: Purity Kamau

Exemplary Teacher Initials: SH

School: Brumby Elementary Grade: 3rd

Lesson Topic: Water Filtration

The teacher prepared the student for the main activity quite well. She gave the students
time to discuss the importance water and reflect back on the number of times they had
used water during the day. She then shared some facts on water availability on planet
Earth and availability of clean water in different parts of the world. She asked mind
provoking questions about taking the water we have for granted. The water filtration
activity seemed challenging but the instructions given were clear. The water filtration
procedure was simplified enough for the third graders to follow. The directions on the
recording sheet were equally clear and simple. The students had a chance to predict the
results and carry out the activity. Some groups were able to redo the activity with the
filter materials arranged in a different way. The closing of the lesson was great, however,
it was a bit rushed as time was running out.

The lesson’s performance objectives for the students were attained to a great extent
since the students understood the issues of water pollution and the importance of
access to clean water. They were able to make simple water filters, filter water, observe
and make conclusions

It was interesting to see the students get surprised at often they use water every day.
Most of them also seemed to assume that water is always available to everyone in the
world. I believe the activity left the student with a healthy appreciation of the water
around them.
