Photography is the science, art, application and practice of creating durable images by

recording light or other electromagnetic radiation, either electronically by means of an image sensor,
or chemically by means of a light-sensitive material such as photographic film
An image (from Latin: imago) is an artifact that depicts visual perception, for example, a photo or
a two-dimensional picture, that has a similar appearance to some subject—usually a physical object
or a person, thus providing a depiction of it.
An image sensor or imaging sensor is a sensor that detects and conveys the information that
constitutes an image. It does so by converting the variable attenuationof light waves (as they pass
through or reflect off objects) into signals, small bursts of current that convey the information. The
waves can be light or other electromagnetic radiation. Image sensors are used in electronic imaging
devices of both analog and digital types, which include digital cameras, camera modules, medical
imagingequipment, night vision equipment such as thermal imaging devices, radar, sonar, and
others. As technology changes, digital imaging tends to replace analog imaging.

Photographic film is a strip or sheet of transparent plastic film basecoated on one side with
a gelatin emulsion containing microscopically small light-sensitive silver halide crystals. The sizes
and other characteristics of the crystals determine the sensitivity, contrast and resolution of the film.

The word "photography" was created from the Greek roots φωτός (phōtos), genitive of φῶς
(phōs), "light" and γραφή (graphé) "representation by means of lines" or "drawing", together
meaning "drawing with light".

It is an art , the way you capture a moment and then the way you project it to the person around.
it is not always freezing a moment but to have an idea and then tell it in one image. Check for
Star trails or time lapses they are ideas and are a combination of many images.

What exactly does the photographer do?

A photographer is a professional that focuses on the art of taking photographs with a digital or
film camera. Photographers use artificial and/or natural lighting to snap pictures of various
people, places and things in a variety of settings.
What type of art is a photograph?
The visual arts are art forms such as ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, design, crafts,
photography, video, filmmaking, and architecture. Many artistic disciplines (performing arts, conceptual
art, textile arts) involve aspects of the visual arts as well as arts of other types.

What is Fine art Photography?

Known also as "photographic art", "artistic photography" and so on, the term "fine art
photography" has no universally agreed meaning or definition: rather, it refers to an
imprecise category of photographs, created in accordance with the creative vision of the
cameraman. The basic idea behind the genre, is that instead of merely capturing a realistic
rendition of the subject, the photographer is aiming to produce a more personal - typically
more evocative or atmospheric - impression. One might simplify this, by saying that fine art
photography describes any image taken by a camera where the intention is aesthetic (that
is, a photo whose value lies primarily in its beauty - see, Aesthetics) rather than scientific
(photos with scientific value), commercial (product photos), or journalistic (photos with
news or illustrative value). (See also: Is Photography Art?) Artistic photos have been used
frequently in collage art (more correctly, photocollage), by artists like David Hockney
(b.1937); and in photomontage, by Dadaists like Raoul Hausmann (1886-1971), Helmut
Herzfelde (1891-1968) and Hanna Hoch (1889-1979), by Surrealist artists like Max Ernst
(1891-1976), by the avant-garde Fluxus group in the 1960s, and by Pop artists like Richard
Hamilton. Photos may also be incorporated into mixed-media installation art,
and assemblage art. Today, photography is exhibited in many of the best galleries of
contemporary artaround the world.

Theoretical Framework. Photography is an artistic tool that consists in the recording of light or other
electromagnetic radiation. Since the beginning of photography it has been used as a way of showing
realities.

Photographs: Types of Photos. ... Aesthetically evaluative photographs: These make judgments not
about social issues but about aesthetic issues. They tell us what is worth aesthetic observation.

from Terry Barrett, Criticizing Photographs

Descriptive photographs: All photos describe, at some level, but some are not intended to do anything
more than that.

Explanatory photographs: Your driver's license photo describes; Eadward Muybridge's photos of a horse
running explained. Social scientists use photos to explain as well - e.g., visual anthropology. These
photos are intended to document a way of life.

Interpretive photographs: These do not strive for scientific accuracy, as explanatory photos do, but
rather are personal or subjective interpretations. They tell us how things are, but there is an
interpretation of how things are imbedded in the photo.

Ethically evaluative photographs: These photos make ethical judgments. They praise or condemn
aspects of society.
Aesthetically evaluative photographs: These make judgments not about social issues but about aesthetic
issues. They tell us what is worth aesthetic observation.

Theoretical photographs: These comment on art and the making of art. They raise questions about the
making of photos. For example, they may deliberately make fun of ethically evaluative photos.
