[CF6-80C2A5F] ENGINE FUEL SYSTEM PURGING, ON WING - MAINTENANCE PRACTICES
1. GENERAL
This procedure provides purging instructions for the CF680C2A52 Engine Fuel System when
installed on the A300 aircraft. Purging replaces residual fuel in the engine with preservation
oil, while the engine is installed on the aircraft. This procedure is strongly recommended to
preclude the necessity for a more complicated shop purging procedure after the engine is
removed and to alleviate Hazardous Material shipping regulation requirements.

A300-600 AMM - ENGINE FUEL SYSTEM PURGING,
ON WING - MAINTENANCE PRACTICES

3. PROCEDURE
A. The following procedures are for on-wing engine fuel system purging:
(1) With aircraft electrical power ON, pull engine fire switch to shut off fuel at the
pylon. Install a warning notice to prohibit handle actuation to normal (pushed)
position while maintenance procedures are in progress.
(2) Remove electrical power from aircraft.
(3) Gain access to main fuel supply hose, fuel pump, and the HMU.
(4) Remove inlet drain plug from bottom of fuel pump (Ref. Fig. 201 ) and drain
fuel. Re-install drain plug with new O-ring (P/N M25988-1-906). Torque and
safety wire the drain plug.
(5) Disconnect fuel supply hoses between IDG oil heat exchanger and fuel nozzle
manifold (Ref. Fig. 204 ) . Drain fuel. Reconnect fuel supply hoses and
tighten to specified torque.
(6) Disconnect main fuel supply hose at the pylon interface panel (Ref. Fig.
202 ) and install Block-Off Plate/Drain Valve (P/N 1539- EPK-2 from Purge
Kit) to the pylon interface panel where main fuel supply hose was
disconnected. Ensure shut-off valve is in the CLOSE position.
(7) Install the Oil Input Quick Connect Adapter, (P/N 1539-EPK-5 from Purge Kit)
onto the flange of the engine fuel supply hose with gasket (MS27196-32) and
hardware provided in the purge kit.
(8) Remove plug at the regulated body pressure (PCB) port on the HMU (Ref.
Fig. 203 ) . Temporarily install Reducer (P/N 6-4-HTX-S from Purge Kit) with
packing (P/N M83248-1-906) in the PCB port. Connect the Drain Line/Shut-
Off Valve (P/N 1539-EPK-8 from Purge Kit) to the reducer now in the PCB
port. Retain the removed plug for later re-installation in the PCB port.
(9) Place a 10-gallon (minimum) container under the end of the previously
installed PCB drain line.
(10) Fill the oil Pressurizing Tank (GRA-236-151 from Purge Kit) with a minimum of
10 gallons of preservation oil (MIL-L-6081C). Position the pressurizing tank
close enough to the engine for hoses to reach appropriate connections.
CAUTION : BEFORE INTRODUCING OIL TO THE ENGINE,
TEMPERATURE OF OIL MUST BE BETWEEN 70°F AND 120°
F OR ENGINE DAMAGE CAN OCCUR. DURING WINTER
CONDITIONS, ENSURE PRESERVATION OIL IS STORED IN
AN AREA THAT MAINTAINS AN APPROPRIATE
TEMPERATURE.
(11) Connect regulated air source (maximum 100 psi) to the pressurizing tank air
inlet adapter. OPEN inlet valve and adjust regulator to 5 to 25 psig. Connect

one end of the Oil Input Hose (P/N 1539-EPK-7 from Purge Kit) to the
pressurizing tank outlet port and the other end to the oil input quick connect
adapter that was previously attached to the engine side of the fuel supply
hose.
(12) OPEN the pressurizing tank outlet valve and the drain line/shut-off valve to
start oil flow through the fuel pump and MEC. When oil begins to flow from
drain line, CLOSE drain line/shut-off valve. Leave pressurizing tank outlet
valve OPEN.
(13) Inspect engine inlet and exhaust prior to motoring.
(14) With aircraft electrical power ON, RESET engine fire handle.
(15) Set up cockpit for engine wet/dry motor per Jet Run Handbook, Chapter 5.
CAUTION : DO NOT EXCEED STARTER LIMITS. STARTER MAY BE
CONTINUOUSLY OPERATED FOR 5 MINUTES, BUT MUST
BE COOLED AT LEAST 30 SECONDS FOR EACH MINUTE
OF OPERATION. FOLLOWING TWO 5-MINUTE CYCLES, A
10-MINUTE COOLING PERIOD IS REQUIRED BETWEEN
ADDITIONAL 5-MINUTE CYCLES.
NOTE : Ensure Fuel Shut-Off Lever is in CLOSED position.
(16) Motor the engine at maximum speed (approximately 20% N2).
(17) OPEN drain line/shut-off valve to start oil flow through fuel pump and MEC.
Continue motoring until fuel is purged (approximately 2 minutes) and a steady
stream of preservation oil is noted coming from temporary drain line. CLOSE
drain line/shut-off valve. Leave pressurizing tank outlet valve OPEN and
continue to motor engine.
(18) Move cockpit fuel shut-off lever to OPEN position. Continue motoring the
engine for 10 to 20 seconds.
(19) Move cockpit fuel shut-off lever to CLOSED position. Continue motoring for an
additional 2 minutes to clear residual preservation oil from engine gas path.
(20) Terminate motoring and let engine come to a complete stop.
(21) CLOSE oil pressurizing tank inlet valve and disconnect regulated air source.
OPEN pressurizing tank drain fitting to relieve trapped pressure and then
CLOSE pressurizing tank outlet valve. Remove one end of the oil input hose

for the pressurizing tank outlet port and the other end from the oil input quick
connect adapter attached to the engine at the fuel supply hose.
(22) With aircraft electrical power ON, pull engine fire switch to shut off fuel at the
pylon.
(23) Remove electrical power from aircraft.
(24) Open block-off plate/drain valve installed on the pylon interface panel and
catch residual fuel.
(25) Remove block-off plate/drain valve from pylon interface panel. Remove oil
input quick connect adapter from main fuel supply hose. Catch oil spillage
from main fuel supply hose in appropriate container. Plug/cap all line/hose
openings.
(26) Remove the drain line/shut-off valve assembly from the reducer temporarily
installed in the PCB port. Remove the reducer from the PCB port and re-install
the plug, retained in step 5, on the HMU. Torque to 135 in.-lb. and safety wire
appropriately.
(27) Ensure ALL engine fuel purge kit equipment is properly returned to kit.
(28) Complete Fuel System Purge Tag (Fedex M-3456) and attach to the engine.
NOTE : If engine tarp is to be installed after engine is removed, attach
tag to outside of tarp so that it is clearly visible.
