In the book Night, Elie Wiesel uses repetition in an effort to make the reader

comprehend his dying faith in the Jewish religion and God. He includes repetition of the
question: “Where is God?” during a small child’s hanging to convey the hopelessness of
the captive people. Their God is their source of light, hope and guidance. The actions of
the Nazis were so terrible that the people began to doubt that God was with them. They
believed such sickening and ghastly atrocities would’ve been stopped by their
all-powerful being if it was present. Therefore, he loses his faith and falls away from his
religion because he doesn’t believe it’s principle about God anymore. This is a big
difference from the beginning of the book, when he was very devout. The repetition that
Wiesel adds in his book allows the reader to understand his viewpoint on the Jewish
religion and how he seems to be falling away from it as a result of the concentration
camps and the hangings.
