Why Do I Write?

I like to read epic fantasy books and crazy sci-fi fighting adventures. I enjoy historical fiction and even
nonfiction, but I enjoy fictitious works best. Classics are great (but kind of overrated, sometimes). I like fantasy
and sci-fi because they are both fun to dive into because they bring the reader to a completely different world
than their own, with new rules and new ideas. The characters in fictitious novels are also easier to relate to and
truly know because they can be completely fleshed out in a book (as they are under absolute control of the
author). The plot in sci-fi and fantasy novels is also usually better than anything nonfiction because it plays off
better characters and more interesting rules/environments than real life and can be planned from beginning to
end.
I like to write short fiction stories with characters that people can feel for. I also like writing big, long
books. However, I usually run into the same issue every time I try to complete one-- I take too long, and by the
time I’m writing the ending, I’ve become a substantially better writer. So, the writings in the beginning seem
much worse, and so I just become trapped in a loop of re-writing and improving. I think I like sci-fi better than
fantasy for writing short stories, but when trying to write a long book I enjoy the depth and complications a
fantasy book provides. I love writing both, but I couldn’t stand writing a biography or historical account (one
that’s accurate, at least) because then I’m completely constrained in terms of plot and characters.
I grew up reading, and still do read, books that completely envelop me into their world. The characters
seem so real and tangible in some of them that I can feel for them, without ever having met them or anything in
real life. I have always thought that was amazing, so I am motivated to bring that feeling to other people too.
I’ve been writing since I was little, and I’ve gotten decent at it so I am also motivated by not wanting to waste a
talent I’ve been practicing for such a long time. I would really just like to be able to consistently create a piece
of work that can reach into somebody and make them feel some type of emotion strongly-- whether it be
happiness, sadness, or fear.
I hope I can become a better writer and be able to create more convincing stories that can get points
across to people and create characters that matter in people’s heads. Hopefully I’ll increase my writing skills
overall, but I would like to focus on these two main points. I would also like to be able to learn how to focus on
writing more often because I usually can’t just force myself to get in the zone. I would like to learn some focus
techniques or something like that. I would also like to learn different true techniques to writing because I just go
with my gut most of the time.
