Meaning:
Honeycomb refers to voids in concrete caused by the mortar not filling the spaces between the coarse
aggregate particles.

or,
Honeycombs can be simply be defined as a rough, pitted surface or voids in concrete resulting from
incomplete filling of the concrete against the formwork, often caused by using concrete that is too stiff or
by not vibrating it sufficiently after it has been poured.

Causes of Honeycomb:
 Improper Water cement rartio (W/C ratio) that causes poor workability
 Poor consolidation or insufficient vibration
 Over sized aggregate
 Improper rebar placement which leads to poor concrete fill
 Grout leakage along the perimeter of side formwork

Is Concrete Honeycomb a concern?

Depending upon the size/scale and specific location of honeycomb we can determine the problem that
might arise due to it.
If the honeycombing is deep enough to allow moisture into the cavities, Reinforcement rebars gets reacted
with moist which leads to the corrosion. Corrosion weaken the strength of Reinforced concrete.

Preventive measure:
 Compaction should be done with uniform vibration
 Concrete mix design and workability should be reviewed and adjusted
 Defective mould forms in formworks should be repaired
 Proper size aggregate should be used

Remedial Measure
Repairing of the honeycomb consist of few steps which needs to be driven. A common approach includes:
1. Remove all the loose
2. Wash off dust and dirt in the affected area
3. Grout the honeycomb area
4. Plaster the affected surface
