Welcome to the 2016-2018 edition of the TrailpartsTM product catalogue. You may notice some changes from
previous versions and there’s a very good reason for that. Here at Trailequip Ltd, we’re committed to making doing
business with us easier, faster and as simple as possible. That’s why we’ve simplified the layout of this catalogue
and streamlined the design to make product selection and parts identification as easy as possible. From easy-to-
read product tables to our comprehensive appendix of fitting instructions and other guidelines, we’re confident
that this catalogue will be a very useful tool during the next 24 months.
For those of you who are new to the Trailequip family, here’s a brief overview of who we are and what we promise:
We are, like many of our customers, an independent 100% NZ owned company with family ownership. Our
products are manufactured using local and overseas factories, in addition to New Zealand, using suppliers from
Australia, USA, China, India, Taiwan, and Korea. We have developed, own our own tooling and hold patents for key
products designed to meet New Zealand market needs more specifically than buying brands in from overseas can
do.

These couplings are rated to 3500kg and are referred to as non-braked as they do not directly operate trailer
brakes on their own. They are often used with trailer brakes, however—both with actuator driven hydraulic

The Trailparts™ master cylinder was designed to meet 3 key criteria:
 to lower overall unit height
 to enable the incorporation of a revised Autoback reversing
solenoid at lower cost
 to use commonly available parts
The low height theme continues with the design of the output to
the brakes, being designed to be used with low profile and strong
C34 banjo hoses and fittings to reduce the risk of brake line damage.
These master cylinders are now supplied as standard on all
Trailparts™ and Autofit™ braked couplings.

AUTOBACK REVERSING SOLENOID

The Autoback reversing system makes reversing loaded trailers that
are fitted with hydraulic over-ride brakes quick, easy and safe. The
system was developed by Trailequip as an alternative to existing
products, which were bulky and expensive to fit.
With the introduction of the Autoback, Trailparts™ became the first
company to offer a compact and inexpensive reversing lock out brake
system in New Zealand that is designed for use on our roads and
terrain.
The Autoback braking systems is an affordable and recommended
option for all new trailers, and can also easily be retrofitted to
existing braked trailers.

The master cylinder entry kit was designed to combat the common
workplace issue of copper brake line between the master cylinder
and the chassis frame getting damaged.
The banjo hose adaptor kit minimizes the risk of your brakes being

Axle’s Hints
Autofit coupling internal parts to be fitted by Trailequip
staff only in order to ensure a secure ball fit.

MECHANICAL BRAKE COUPLINGS
Due to the increasing shift to hydraulic override brakes, the all new Trailparts
override coupling was designed without the sawtooth backing.
When mechanical brakes are a requirement or for

a retrofit job, the additional plate simply mounts
on top of the coupling giving the benefits of the
Trailparts coupling and the functionality of
mechanical braking.

COUPLING MAINTENANCE
As couplings are a critical connection, it is important that they are mounted correctly and checked regularly.
Trailparts™ couplings will perform safely and achieve an extended life if these simple checks are performed
regularly. These steps must be observed in order for warranties to apply.
MOUNTING TRAILER COUPLINGS

 Always mount with high tensile (8.8 or higher) zinc plated bolts
secured with nyloc nuts
 Braked Couplings are designed to be secured with M12 bolts. Non-
braked couplings use M10 bolts.
 M12 bolts should be torqued to 56ft/lb., M10 to 32ft/lb.
 Nyloc nuts need to have at least one full turn of thread extended past
the nut
GREASING AND LUBRICATION

Properly greased couplings are the key to long life and safe use.
 Dry ball connections and shafts will lead to premature wear and
failure
 All couplings must be greased lightly in the ball area
 Braked couplings should be greased on load bearing surfaces using
the grease nipples
OVER-RIDE COUPLING ADJUSTMENT

For safe and efficient operation of the over-ride brakes, the actuating
lever must be adjusted accurately.
 Typical clearance for standard disc and drum braked should be set
at 2-3mm for light load, and 3-4mm for heavier loads
 For high performance Trailparts™ Patriot Brakes, increase these
clearances by 1-2mm to prevent early brake lockup and to reduce
the risk of drag
GENERAL MAINTENANCE
Couplings and wheel hubs should be maintained regularly to ensure safe
towing.
 Wheel bearings should be re-greased on a regular basis
 Wheels should be checked for movement and noise by jacking the
wheel off the ground.
 The general condition of the coupling should be monitored when
using the trailer, including loose fittings, premature wear, cracks, leaks
in brake lines, master cylinder damage.

Increasing customer demand for ready-to-fit axle solutions has led to the investment in tooling and
infrastructure for Trailparts™ beam axles to be manufactured in house, and offered to customers as a core
Trailparts™ service. Any axle using Trailparts™ Axle Components can be ordered, and having an axle delivered
that is accurately manufactured and fully assembled is ideal for trailer builders who don’t build a volume of
axles large enough to justify purchasing their own tooling and fixtures to ensure accuracy.
As axles are custom manufactured in house, many variants are available, with any mix of finish, material, hubs,
brakes and configurations available, ensuring your finished product is exactly what is required for your project.

PCD FINDER
Pitch Circle Diameter (PCD) is the measurement taken by finding the dead centre of the hub/wheel rim, and
scribing a circle through the centre of each wheel stud or hole. As the illustrations show at below, 4 stud and 6
stud PCDs are easy to find, but care must be taken when measuring for a 5 stud one. This can be done accurately
by taking the measurement “A” in Fig.2, and dividing by 0.587785. This measurement should be taken as
accurately as possible, and not rounded.

TRAILER BRAKE INFORMATION & GUIDELINES
BASIC REQUIREMENTS
0 – 2000 KG
No legal requirements for trailer brakes. If brakes are fitted they must be serviceable. The vehicle/trailer
combination must be capable of stopping within 7 m from 30 km/h without damage to the structure of the tow
vehicle or the trailer. The towing capacity of the vehicle being used to pull a trailer should be considered when
decisions whether to fit brakes to a trailer are being made.
2000 – 2500 KG
Trailers must be fitted with a service brake on at least one axle. Indirect (over-ride) or direct (cab-controlled) type
brakes can be fitted. The tow coupling must have a rating at least commensurate with the laden trailer and have
either; a) twin crossed safety chains, or b) an electric breakaway brake system. The vehicle/trailer combination
must be capable of stopping within 7 m from 30 km/h.
2501 – 3500 KG
Trailers must be fitted with direct (cab-controlled) service brakes, a breakaway brake system and an independent
parking brake on at least one axle (capable of holding the vehicle at rest on a slope of 1 in 5). The vehicle/trailer
combination must be capable of stopping within 7 m from 30 km/h. This will usually mean that 2 axles will need to
be braked.
3501 - 10000 KG
These trailers are subject to heavy transport regulations and COF testing, and are called TC class trailers. Inertia
based controllers are not allowed on these trailers, and direct service brakes must be fitted to each axle, with a
handbrake on at least half the number of axles. A braking efficiency of 50% must be achieved, and the same
stopping and handbrake performance as detailed for trailers over 2501kg above.
BRAKING SYSTEMS
INDIRECT SYSTEMS
Indirect service brakes are those that operate without input directly from the driver of the tow vehicle. They are
usually inertia-activated systems and this is the most commonly used system under 2500 kg.
DIRECT SYSTEMS
Direct service brakes are those that operate as a direct result of braking input from the driver of the tow vehicle.
They are load-adjustable and incorporate an emergency override function which operates the trailer brakes
independently of the tow vehicle from the driver’s seat.
BRAKE TYPES
DISC BRAKES
Disc brakes are a rugged, low maintenance braking option and are suitable for all braking applications. They are the
only brake that can safely be submerged in water. They are the most efficient trailer brakes, and when higher
performance options such as Trailparts™ Patriot versions are specified, assist significantly in reducing stopping
distances.
DRUM BRAKES—HYDRAULIC
Hydraulic drum brakes are an economical and effective braking option. They are not as efficient as disc type brakes,
but suited for use on a wide range of domestic trailers, caravans and horse floats, with their smooth, damped
braking action making them ideal for livestock and fragile loads.
DRUM BRAKES—ELECTRIC
Electric drum brakes are an effective and efficient braking option. They are able to be used in both direct and
indirect brake systems and are easily mated to a breakaway brake system. Also incorporated is an independent,
mechanical parking brake function, required on trailers over 2500kg.

BRAKING SYSTEM ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES
OVER-RIDE SYSTEMS—INDIRECT
Override brakes are indirect systems, inertia-activated and operated by the weight of a towed trailer. A coil spring
in the coupling is compressed, applying the brakes proportionately to the degree of spring compression. Available
as mechanical disc, hydraulic disc and hydraulic drum type brakes.

Used with electric drum brakes. A trailer-mounted brake controller is pre-set to match the load carried on the
trailer. Braking is triggered by the vehicle’s brake lights being activated, and delivered proportionate to the load
setting registered on the controller.

ELECTRIC SYSTEMS—DIRECT
This is the most economical to fit of all direct braking systems. Regulated by in-cab brake controllers with an
emergency brake override function and adjustable load settings, they accurately match braking output with the
weight of the load carried. This system is easily mated to an emergency breakaway brake system required when
the towed load exceeds 2500kg . TrailpartsTM SE controllers are easily switched between tow vehicles.

ELECTRIC/HYDRAULIC – BRAKERITE™ – DIRECT

This system combines performance advantages of direct electric brake systems and the efficiency of hydraulic disc
brakes, providing a direct, high-performance and full submersible brake system. Braking input is measured by a
brake controller containing an accelerometer, with the resulting output transferred into accurate, proportional
and smooth braking. If a TrailpartsTM SE control system is specified, the in-cab portion is easily transferrable to
other tow vehicles.

HANDBRAKE UPGRADES FOR TRAILPARTS PATRIOT CALIPERS

An all-new development means that Trailparts™ Patriot calipers are quickly and easily able to have a mechanical
park brake fitted, which is operated by cables and completely independently of the hydraulic components in the
caliper.
Every Patriot caliper is machined to take this upgrade as required, and is a cost effective solution to the
requirement by law for braked trailers over 2500kg to be fitted with a mechanical park brake; both at the time that
the trailer is being built, and as an upgrade option at a later date.

With a faster response time and more proportional braking than traditional, surge-type actuators, the BrakeRiteTM
is perfect for nearly any towing application from light to heavy duty. The system works with most in-cab brake
controllers to sense when and how you apply the brakes in the tow vehicle. An electrical signal is then sent to the
actuator to trigger it's pump and motor. Brake fluid is released and sent to the trailer brakes to activate them. The
result is real-time braking that, thanks to the electronic proportional valve system, is also smooth and controlled.
Key features include:

 Hybrid electronic control board gives compatibility with most common brake controllers.

WHAT IS THE SE CONTROLLER?

The patented* TrailpartsTM SE Brake Control system makes it possible for any suitable tow vehicle** to tow a
trailer fitted with an SE module, and the key word here is ANY. Trailparts™ SE Brake Controllers will:
 Avoid ALL costly hard-wiring normally associated with in-cab brake controllers. No direct power feed is
required from the tow vehicle’s battery to the controller or on-trailer module.
 Allow towing of SE equipped trailers with electric drum brakes AND electric/hydraulic actuators***.
 Give the ability to switch the in-cab portion of the controller between tow vehicles. It’s fast and easy to
legally tow TB class trailers (between 2501kg and 3500kg) with any suitable vehicle.
 The entire Trailparts™ SE brake control system is multi-voltage capable, removing the need for costly
reducers in the electrical system. Over-voltage damage commonly inflicted on braking systems of this type is

BRAKING SYSTEMS
HOW DOES THE SE CONTROLLER WORK?
The Trailparts™ SE brake control system really is simple, and is made up of three parts. These are:
TRAILPARTSTM SE BRAKE CONTROLLER

This plugs into a standard vehicle power socket, and communicates wirelessly with the on-trailer module to
regulate braking effort generated. It is multi-voltage capable and can therefore be used in any suitable tow vehicle.
The in-vehicle SE controller by TrailpartsTM has three key functions:
 Allows the on-trailer module to be programmed to deliver the pre-set desired level of braking according to
the load carried, and is variable in 20 braking levels from 5% through to 100%. The effort generated in each
braking cycle is also displayed in a digital readout as a percentage, making setting and adjusting the braking
effort delivered to the trailer simple and intuitive.
 Has five sensitivity adjustment settings, which alter how quickly
the pre-set braking level is applied on the trailer. A lower setting,
for example, gradually increases the braking force, making the SE
controller ideal for livestock or horse float applications.
 Features an emergency switch that engages the trailer brakes
independently of the tow vehicle, allowing drivers to control trailer
snaking or sway.
ON-TRAILER SE MODULE
This is mounted on the trailer, parallel with the direction of travel. It houses
a microprocessor and accelerometer, which senses the rate that the stop is
occurring, and applies more or less braking to the trailer wheels
accordingly. It is multi-voltage capable, battery operated and can be towed
by any suitable tow vehicle. It is housed in an IP67 rated alloy enclosure,
with the internal components fully encased in resin for protection against
shock and water ingress, which makes them suitable for exposed mounting.
BREAKAWAY KIT
As with most braking systems for TB class trailers, the breakaway kit
ensures power is applied to the trailer brakes in the event of a tow vehicle
separation. However, with the SE brake control system, the breakaway
battery is also used as the source of power to operate the on-trailer SE
module. This in turn is trickle charged by drawing power from the trailer tail
lamp circuit, which means that the towing vehicle must have its lights on
when towing with an SE controller.

EVO CONTROLLER FULLY PROPORTIONAL - FOR TC CLASS TRAILERS

The Sens-a-brake™ EVO brake controller measures the driver’s
braking input using patented technology. The tow vehicle’s brake
pedal is exchanged for one with a patented pressure-sensitive film
embedded in it. Pedal pressure applied by the driver when braking
is measured by the in-cab controller which adjusts the trailer brake
output to exactly replicate the braking pattern of the tow vehicle,
without being affected by influences such as gradient. This
controller includes a switch that allows temporary application of
the trailer brakes from the drivers seat, making them suitable for BS3595MTC
use on trailers up to 10,000kg.

Duratorques provide a top-tier, low ride height suspension system that is suitable for fitting to all types of trailers.
Using synthetic rubber cords specifically developed for this application to provide suspension, Duratorques are
totally self contained and can easily be fitted to the trailer chassis. Other Duratorque features and benefits include:

TANDEM SUSPENSION GUIDELINES
EQUALISING SUSPENSION
This type of suspension utilizes a rocker arm between
the front and rear axles which assist in always
distributing the trailer weight equally over two axles.
This helps to avoid axle overloading and will prolong
axle, hub and bearing life. It will also enhance the
towing characteristics of the trailer.
NON-EQUALISING SUSPENSION
This type of suspension is essentially two single axles
mounted in tandem using either eye/slipper multi-
leaf springs or torsion type suspensions. Load sharing
is not achieved to the same extent as equalizing
suspensions types but is an adequate and economical
tandem suspension option especially when being
used solely on-road. Note that any non-load sharing
suspensions require that the capacity of each axle is
de-rated by 25% to avoid bearing and suspension
failure from periodic point loading, as shown at right.

SHOCK ABSORBER KITS
Trailparts™ shock absorbers are designed specifically for

trailer applications. An easy to fit kit that bolts to the trailer
through the suspension axle plates and U-bolts, they
enhance the ride characteristics of any trailer. Incidences of
trailer sway are also reduced due to the controlled rebound
that conventional trailer suspensions simply cannot deliver
on their own. As a result, these kits are ideally suited to
large trailers such as caravans that are prone to wind-
induced sway. Other applications that have consistently
proved measureable benefits from the installation of these
kits are horse floats, other livestock trailers, and heavy SSA380K
commercial-type trailers that are capable of higher axle
loads, but are also required to travel unloaded.

TOWBAR INTERFACE KITS
With many late model vehicles towing trailers can cause problems with electronic systems. Trailparts towbar and
trailer interface kits are designed to:
 Eliminate fault codes commonly caused by trailers equipped with LED tail-lights
 Shield vehicle electronics from short circuits and prevent blown fuses.

LED TAIL LIGHT TRAILER INTERFACE
This trailer lighting interface is unique in that it not only prevents

many problems and fault codes experienced by vehicles towing
LED tail-lights equipped trailers, but also doubles as a junction
box. This fully waterproof unit is wired in-line on the trailer and
makes the LED tail-lights look like incandescent bulbs to the tow
vehicle, preventing LED flickering and short circuit warnings in the
tow vehicle caused by the low current draw of LEDs. This unit will
work with 85% of all vehicles but there may be some cases where
a trailer mounted LED resistor may be required.

TYRE SPECIFICATIONS
The Trailparts™ range of trailer tyres is selected specifically for use with trailers, featuring harder rubber
compounds and blockier, deep treads that aren’t as commonly found on tyres for cars and commercial vehicles.
LOAD/SPEED RATINGS & INFLATION

Load Rating: This is often expressed in two ways – as a basic weight rating, such as 850kg; or as a load/speed index
rating. While the weight rating is easily understood, the load/speed index rating gives a load rating at a specified
speed. This is because the ability of a tyre to carry weight reduces with increased speed. The table below can be
used to determine a load rating for tyres carrying these markings only.
Inflation: The pressure specified on tyres is what tyres must be inflated to in order to carry their specified weight
safely for extended periods. Under-inflation will lead to uneven wear, whilst over inflation can lead to blowouts and
rim damage if obstacles are hit. Tyre pressures should be checked regularly without load on the trailer.

ROAD TYRE SIZING EXPLAINED

Tyre sizing isn’t complicated, although there are some less commonly
known explanations given here. Key points are:
Tyre Width: This is obvious, with the first number, such as 165, 185
etc denoting tyre width.
Aspect Ratio or Profile: This is the height of the sidewall of the tyre,
and is normally expressed as a percentage of the tyre width. So a
195/65R14 size marking means that the sidewall height is 65% of the Markings on a 185R14C
tyre width. Commercial tyres often omit this figure, for example, commercial tyre
expressed as 185R14C. Manufacturers all adopt a standard aspect
ratio for these tyre types, this being 82% of tyre width, so in this case,
the sidewall will be 151.7mm high.
Rim Size: States the rim diameter that the tyre mounts onto. A tyre
will often have markings present that recommend a min/max rim
width.
Calculating Wheel Diameter: Taking these criteria above, it is easy to
determine the size of a radial tyre. Add 2 sidewall heights (top and
bottom), and add the rim diameter, which will give an overall wheel
diameter.

WOBBLE ROLLER SYSTEMS
The multi-wobble roller system is the option preferred by most OEM boat trailer manufacturers for boat support
and retrieval. Available as eights, quads, dual or single assemblies, they offer excellent hull support, and make
unloading and retrieval of the boat a simple task. All pivot points are offset so that the rollers are pointing towards
both the keel and stern of the boat. All components are galvanized for long life, and available in sizes to suit every
application.
NOTE: All wobble sets include retaining washers and split pins but exclude the rollers themselves

of the unit. Protect from the weather as much as possible.
 Adjust the dial on the unit to give the required braking. If the
braking is too severe use a lower setting or if it is ineffective a
higher setting.
 Unit is multi-volt. Input can be either 12v or 24v. Output
should always be to a 12v brake system.
Wire connections as follows:

 Red to power input. This can either be direct to the brake light circuit or to a separate 12v or 24v power
source via a relay on the brake light circuit.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
BS3578 - TRAILPARTSTM PROPORTIONAL ON-TRAILER CONTROLLER

This brake controller is designed to apply trailer brakes in direct proportion to the tow vehicle. Because it uses
inertia to sense the braking effort required, it is very important that these instructions for installation and use are
read carefully and fully understood.
The controller must be parallel

with the direction of travel when
mounted and on the R/H (driver’s)
side of the trailer. Take care if
installing on an A-frame drawbar
that a bracket is used to alter the
angle of the controller to the
parallel position.
The controller must be mounted

on a vertical surface and parallel
with the road surface also.
BS3578 - INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

Because this is a proportional controller, it will provide braking with inertia, but not at rest. To allow successful
vehicle compliance testing results, a simple process in adjusting the 2 stage dial should be followed as explained
below.
For normal on-road trailer use – the adjustment dial should be

set (according to trailer load) anywhere from 5% to 100%. This
will apply the trailer brakes at that output setting in proportion
to how aggressively the tow vehicle brakes are being applied.
For brake testing purposes only – the first portion of the dial,
marked “Non-proportional braking 50%” should be used when
having the brakes tested at compliance time. This will apply the
brakes to a constant 50% as soon as the brake lamps come on.
It is important to remember that when testing is complete, the dial is turned again to the proportional
segment, marked from 5% to 100%, before on-road use.

LEGAL INFORMATION
SAFETY CHAINS & CONNECTIONS
The safety connection is a critical part of specifying components for a trailer,

and the Trailparts range is rated to meet NZS5467:1993 requirements.
The key points to note in the Code of Practice for Light Trailers related to
safety connections are:
 Safety connection(s) shall have a minimum breaking strength equal to
2 times the Maximum Towed mass.
 The attachment of the safety connection(s) to both the towbar and
drawbar shall be separate from the coupling and its fastenings.
 The safety connection(s) attachments shall have a strength equal to,
or greater than, the safety connection.
 The safety connection(s) shall be mechanically fitted as close as is
practicable to the longitudinal centre line and of such length that in
the event of coupling failure it will prevent the drawbar hitting the
ground as well as controlling the direction of the trailer to follow the
towing vehicle.
 Welding of chain is not acceptable.
 The safety connection(s) attachment to the trailer shall be positioned
so that they will not come into contact with the ground.
 Safety connection(s) shall be indelibly marked by the component
manufacturer with their rating. The rating shall enable the minimum
breaking load of the components to be identified.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR TRAILER BRAKES

0 – 2000 KG
No legal requirements for trailer brakes. If brakes are fitted they must be serviceable. The vehicle/trailer combination must be
capable of stopping within 7 m from 30 km/h without damage to the structure of the tow vehicle or the trailer. The towing
capacity of the vehicle being used to pull a trailer should be considered when decisions whether to fit brakes to a trailer are
being made.
2000 – 2500 KG
Trailers must be fitted with a service brake on at least one axle. Indirect (override) or direct (cab-controlled) type brakes can be
fitted. The tow coupling must have a rating at least commensurate with the laden trailer and have either; a) twin crossed safety
chains, or b) an electric breakaway brake system. The vehicle/trailer combination must be capable of stopping within 7 m from
30 km/h.
2501 – 3500 KG
Trailers must be fitted with direct (cab-controlled) service brakes, a breakaway brake system and an independent parking brake
on at least one axle (capable of holding the vehicle at rest on a slope of 1 in 5). The vehicle/trailer combination must be
capable of stopping within 7 m from 30 km/h. This will usually mean that 2 axles will need to be braked.
3501 - 10000 KG
These trailers are subject to heavy transport regulations and COF testing, and are called TC class trailers. Inertia based
controllers are not allowed on these trailers, and direct service brakes must be fitted to each axle, with a handbrake on at least
half the number of axles. A braking efficiency of 50% must be achieved, and the same stopping and handbrake performance as
detailed for trailers over 2501kg above.
