The Referee
I. MATCH
Background
First match of the quarterfinals of the tournament, Czech Republic won the group A and
had to play against Portugal, the second of group B. Both teams had a not so good start
but they had improved a lot during the group stage. One could have imagined that it
would have been a harder match to referee, but both teams played decently, which
helped for the game to be played without inconvenience. There were more Czech fans in
the Stadium of Warswa in Poland. The field had some difficulties which derived to some
slips of the players, especially in the goal areas. The weather conditions were good, and
the spectators behaved adequately.
II. CONTROL
Comment
Howard Webb used his known style to control the match, this time it worked perfectly, the
players accepted his decisions which contributed to the good control of the match. There
were only a few conflicts between the players, but those were exceptions.
III. DECISIONS
Application of the Laws of the Game – Comment (advice: always refer to aspects
like card management, infringement detection, the application of the advantage
rule, holding in the penalty area after set pieces, simulation and lay extra ordinary
high emphasis on match influencing or even decisive decisions)
He had a very good infringement detection during the match, his card management was
in order, but as always with Webb there is some area to improve in this criteria, which
could be explained with his unique style, his application of the advantage rule was
excellent, and the way he warns the players before the corner kicks was also pretty good.

Corner kick, Webb warns Cristiano Ronaldo and Baros not to take each other,
19
when the corner is taken Cristiano asks for a penalty, but there isn´t.
Foul from Czech player #14 over Portugal player #21, correct, but the ball
21
was out previously
YC for Nani after a foul on Czech Republic # 8 player, the yellow card could
be a bit harsh if it is only for the foul, but Nani had done some fouls before
25
and also protested some previous decisions of Webb´s team, therefore the
YC is correctly given.
26 YC for Veloso after a foul on Darida, correct with out margin for discussion.
Limberski fouls Nani from behind, it should have been a YC, but Webb
33
decides not to give it
Postiga gets injured, Webb could have been a bit quicker with the medical
38 help for the player, or stop the play by himself, but it´s a tendency in the
tournament.
43 There is no penalty on Nani, but the Portuguese players ask for it
Webb misses a foul on a Czech defender and Portugal makes a long shot,
57
lucky Webb that Cech takes the ball.
AR1 flagges for offside and thus disallowes a goal of Portugal, correct
58
decision.
One isolated communication problem between Webb, Atkinson and Mullarkey
68 to decide if it is corner kick for Portugal, at the end they took the right
decision.
69 An other missed foul
Excellent given advantage, as soon as Webb saw it was not longer viable to
84
give it, he gave to foul
No penalty on Cristiano Ronaldo, who falls on the ground as soon as he feels
87
the touch of the defender
88 Limbersky gets finally booked after a foul, correct
90+3 Coentrao makes one foul, he could have been yellow carded by Webb
