The second law of thermodynamics can also be stated using Clausius, Kelvin and Planck statements also. Each statement is based on an irreversible process. The Clausius and the Kelvin and Planck statements of the second law of Thermodynamics are given below. Clausius statement: Clausius statement states “it is impossible for a self acting machine working in a cyclic process without any external force, to transfer heat from a body at a lower temperature to a body at a higher temperature. It considers transformation of heat between two heat reservoirs. Kelvin — Planck statement: Kelvin — Planck statement states ‘it is impossible to construct an engine, which is operating in a cycle produces no other effect except to external heat from a single reservoir and do equivalent amount of work. It considers the transformation of heat into work. Equivalence of Clausius statement to the Kelvin - Planck statement Consider a reservoir having temperature T; and another reservoir at temperature T2. The temperature Ty is higher than the temperature Tz, Consider a heat pump which requires no work and transfers an amount of Qy from low temperature to a higher temperature reservoir, which is violating the Clausius statement. Consider an amount of heat Q; (greater than Q2) be transferred from higher temperature reservoir to a heat engine which develops a net work, W = Qy ~ Qz and rejects Q2 to the low temperature reservoir. Since there is no heat interaction with the low temperature, it can be eliminated, The combined system of the heat engine and heat pump acts then like a heat engine exchanging heat with a single reservoir, which violates the Kelvin - Planck statement. © Email This Page To Your Friend ‘ Print This Page hp smwwchobiggoc-comichoristrythormodnamicstsecont av of tecmocharics/dofne-4ahin plancicand-clausus-sttersirts-of.he-sucondlanecétharmaty.. 4 sone017 Define Kehin Planckand Clavius statements of te seced law of Thermadhramics Category: Second Law of Thermodynamics More Questions Define Carnot Theorem and also give its proof. Discuss the limitations of the first law of Thermodynamics. Calculate the net efficiency of a Heat Engine? ACarnot engine converts one fifth of the heat input into work. If the sink temperature is reduced by 80° C, the efficiency gets doubled, Find the source and the sink temperature. Also give the consequences of the Carnot cycle. Explain Clapeyron-Clausius Equation and also give its derivation A Carnot engine has the same efficiency (i) between 100 K and 500 K and (ii) between T K and 900 K. Calculate the temperature T of the sink. ‘ACamot engine converts one sixth of the heat input into work. If the sink temperature is reduced by 62° C, the efficiency gets doubled, Find the source and the sink temperature. Carnot engine working between a source temperature of Tz and sink temperature of T; has efficiency of 25%. If the sink temperature is reduced by 20° C, the efficiency is increased to 30%. Find the source and the sink temperature. Three real heat engines have the same thermal efficiency and are connected in series. The first engine absorbs 2400 kJ of heat from a thermal reservoir at 1250 K and the third engine ejects its waste of 300 kJ to a sink at 150 K. determine the work output from each engine. Calculate the maximum efficiency of an engine operating between 120° C and 35° C 8 Responses to " Define Kelvin Planck and Clausius statements of the second law of Thermodynamics." shreyash says October 31, 2010 at 7:27 am that was good defination according to csvtu Midhun says: August 9, 2011 at 7:20 am Nice and simple.) sakthi says: August 16, 2011 at 11:13 am It's very good answer. sam says: November 1, 2011 at 9:31 am superb hp swchabiggo-comichoristrythormodnamicstsecond av of thecmochaicsidefne-4ahin-plancicand-clausus-sttersts-of.he-sucondlanecétharmady. 8 sone017 Define Kehin Planckand Clavius statements of te seced law of Thermodhramics suhail says: November 20, 2011 at 1:59 am It was informative and efficient, Even I didn’t get the correct statement from WIKIPEDIA also.
