Federal Court of Australia Public Notice Re WAD6007 - 1998 Purnulul...
The Federal Court of Australia is trying to locate people who are respondents to the
native title claim known as “Purnululu”. (A map of this claim area, which has been
prepared by the Kimberley Land Council, is included with this notice.)
Generally speaking, a respondent is someone who wants to oppose the claim, or who
has an interest which may be affected if Court makes a native title determination of
the claim. It is different from being a member of the Purnululu claim group
(claimant). The Court understands that some of the people who are respondents to
the Purnululu claim are also members of the Purnululu claim group.
16 years ago, a lot of people were made respondents to the Purnululu claim by an
order of the Court. The Court is urgently looking to hear from these people about
whether:
a) they want to stay as a respondent to the claim, and
b) if they do, to get some updated contact details.
The Court needs to be able to regularly, and quickly, contact the parties to this
proceeding, including so that the parties are aware of any hearings which are to be
held, and any orders which have been made.
Making sure the Court can contact you is also part of your responsibilities if you are a
respondent party.
If you are one of the people listed above, please contact Natalie Thomas of the
Federal Court in Perth on (08) 9268 7113 to:
Your name is listed above because we do not have up-to-date contact details for you.
We understand that a number of the people listed above may have passed away, and
so we have not used their first names, only their initials. We apologise for any
offence or distress this may cause, however until a further Court order is made, these
people remain respondent parties. If you are a family member who can confirm that
person has passed away, or if you wish to clarify the first (Christian) name of anyone
listed above, please contact Natalie Thomas on (08) 9268 7113.
Please note: a respondent is different from being a claim group member (claimant). If
you would like to find out whether you are a member of the Purnululu claim group,
please contact the Kimberley Land Council on (08) 9194 0100.
