ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is the simulate groundwater flow for AL Teeb
area in Missan province. The study area is located in north and north east
of Missan province. It occurs along the foot of mountains of the Iraqi-
Iranian frontier in south of Iraq, between longitudinal-line ( 47°06'-
47°36' ) and latitude-line ( 32°06'-32°30' ). The considered area is about
1860 km2. Two mathematical models were used; MODFLOW and
MICROFEM. Both models were used to simulate groundwater flow for
steady and unsteady flow conditions. The first model MODFLOW used
finite difference method to calculate the hydraulic head and represented
the study area into rectangular cells have one node in the center, the
second model MICROFEM used finite element method to calculate the
hydraulic head and divided the study area into triangular element have
three nodes in the edges. The models were first calibrated for AL Teep
area using data collected from ten monitoring wells distributed over the
study area. According to the calibration process, the hydraulic
characteristics for the upper aquifer has been identified. The hydraulic
conductivity for the study area was in the range of (1-10) m/day, while,
the specific yield ranged between (0.1-0.4). A comparison between
simulation results of the used models, indicated a more accurate
simulation results for MICROFEM compared with that of MODFLOW.
