Congruent and Similar triangle.

Now, Similar triangle mean two triangle whose sides are proportional (like the similar rectangle question
we did in Concept 9 doc) .

When two triangles are similar such that, CORRESPONDING sides are Equal, they are called congruent.
OR! If corresponding Angles are equal then also triangles will be congruent to each other.Congruent
means exactly same( corresponding angles and sides equal), similar means proportional sides!.

Q1: If a 30 Feet tree casts 18 foot shadow, find the length of shadow cast by 22 foot tree:

(If such questions look confusing, draw figure, a triangle and then apply concept.)

So, draw two traingle, one with height 30 feet and base 18 foot, in second triangle, draw height 22 foot
height and label base as x, now, triangles are similar, because they are similar in shape, (both are right
angled triangle) , so 30/18 = x/22, now you can easily find x,

Q2)

If these two figures are similar,

Sides will be in proportion SO, ATTENTION!, What does that mean? It mean PROPORTION OF LONGEST
SIDE of triangles, will be equal to PROPORTIONAL OF SECOND LONGEST, which will be equal to
PROPORTION of Smalles sides,

So,

12/3 = 10/2.5= 8/2

So, if in question any side is not given, you can easily find it using this relation, like in place of giving
length as 8 in second triangle, if it says find x, then you can use, 10/2.5= x/2, solve for x or use 12/3=x/2 ,
both will give same result, you can use any.
Question3 )

Are these figures congruent?

Remember, not similar, it says congruent!

So, lets see if all the angles are equal or not. So, by looking normally, u ll say they are not as angles
appear different, but PAY attention!, always calculate the third angle of both figures and then see if all
three angles are equal.

So in first triangle, 125+25+x=180, so , x= 30

In second triangle, 125+30+x= 180, x=25,

So, if you see, three angles in both traingles are 125,30 and 25.

So, yes they are congurent triangle.
